Seems Horny was a spare part that didn't fit anymore and there is always a commodity with defenseman
Probably better then trading Horny and having to retain $$ and pickings could have been slim with the NTC
33 year old diminishing Forward for a 26 year old defenseman
meh, the more defense we have, the less chance JJ is here or plays going forward - TheGame316
You get it. |

Horny sucks. He only has value on the powerplay in front of the net (something I think another guy can replace him on)... if the Penguins are serious about getting faster, trading Hornqvist was the only move.
I dont love getting a guy like Matheson, but I think he could be easier to move than Hornqvist was. |

Easy to move? What team would want a six year contract for a 3rd pairing dman making just under $5M? Oh wait. |

You can't label the guy before watching what he brings to the table man. Just be happy we traded a $5.3M contract from our 3rd line in order to be a faster team.
Matheson is not the garbage some people are saying. 26yo too. |

Hey dumbass he’s been in the league for 4 seasons now. You know what you’re getting. You did the same poop with JJ. Just give him a chance first. Lmao. |

You said this with JJ. And you absolutely can. That’s the sweet world we live in with technology of game tapes and statistics. |

He was FLA's 6th dman by ice time. |

Everyone here pretending they're an expert on someone who plays on the 2nd/3rd pairing in FLORIDA
like anyone here has watched more than a passing 5 minutes of a Panthers game
The chief complaint was/is the 3rd line. We all agreed Horn doesn't fit on a 3rd line if the goal is speed and possession. He's not in the top 6
Everyone with ideas of all the better trades out there forgetting GMJR has to also find a team willing to make that trade also |

You always say this as if these guys haven't been in the league for a while so we have a pretty good idea who they are. Every now and then a guy flips a switch when traded, Gudbranson cones to mind, but the change of scenery deal rarely works out. |

Some people here regularly watch teams that happen to play in the same division as Florida. He fails the eye test and the stats test but hey iTs A gOoD tRaDe. |

3rd line should be sheltered at 5v5 and be your PP specialists. |

Apparently he was healthy scratched multiple times last year, and twice in the "playoffs". Yikes. |

See here's why you're wrong. You only watch the Pens, so that's why your opinion of so many non-Penguin players is always so off. I, like many here, actually watch many non-Penguin games throughout the season.

Ok, I'll say this...
Mattheson is bad at hockey. He's less bad at hockey than Johnson, but his contract is twice as bad as Johnson's on a team that already has a surplus of LDs and major cap restraints. |
|
|
|
Comparing him to Johnson is pretty wrong unless you're comparing him to Johnson from 2013-14 until 2016-17. Johnson is atrocious relative to his team in every stretch of play aside from that one while Matheson is a pretty normal negative impact.
Johnson the past three years:
-5.6%, -6.4% & -7.8% relFF
-9.9%, -16.8% & -8.1% relGF
-6.0%, -9.4%, % -8.6% relHDCF
Matheson the past three years:
+0.21%, -2.3% & -1.2% relFF
-2.6%, -5.2% & -3.4% relGF
-1.4%, -2.1%, % -4.5% relHDCF
So not good, but considering his deployment in that 2nd year of the sample (44% of his TOI against top competition), I'm willing to soften my judgement of him to not lump him in with Jack Johnson.
EDIT: This is also while playing clear cut 1st/2nd pairing EV minutes (17:35/game, 18:08/game & 15:50/game) with one of the seasons involving hard matchups. |

Everyone here pretending Hornqvist was OV and every team in the league made multiple offers to GMJR
Diminishing 33 year old winger who's getting more injury prone with a NM/NTC
Maybe it's just trash for trash and its the best we could do
was Simon/McCann/Horn anything we needed to see more of? |

So no other GM in the league overvalues certain assets lol?
I was purely talking about Horny having a NTC versus Matheson currently not having a NTC. |

Does GMJR have a Matheson fetish?
Maybe he thought he was getting Mike Hoffman, not Mike Matheson? |

I’m told there’s a “glitch” with the FLA/PIT trade. It was definitely in progress. We will see if it gets worked out. - jimbro83
Hoping the glitch is that its Ekblad coming back, not Matheson. |

Even if it's trash for trash, you traded 3 years of trash for 6 years of trash. |

This logic is so severely wrong. I've been very vocal that I think Hornqvist is no longer a good fit for this team, but he's far from trash. He's still a good player who does some good things. Calling this trade Trash-for-Trash is just wrong and it also makes the defense worse than it is now.
So depending on who takes Hornqvist's spot and while I wasn't a huge fan of his anymore, you can always do worse. You've now potentially weakened the bottom six and definitely made the defense worse.
