Ron Hainsey scored a fancy goal once, too.

Goddammit.

At least Marshall seems to think he’s a legitimate hockey player but $4+ mil for a bottom pairing defenseman is a death poll even if he can hold his own on the bottom pair.

Dom Luszczyszyn, who I think really knows his poop, is saying a deeper dive needs to be done. He showed stats that were terrible and some that were positive, so I'll be curious what he turns up.

Yeah Pens lucked their way to that one, skewing a winning formula for their GM for years to come.

In a way that is almost down right impossible statistically.

Yep, spitting image of JJ

- TheGame316

Yep really shows his defensive play and not his skating abilities that are similar to JJs.

Stats or no stats, it's unanimous on the Panthers thread : regardless of the return, they couldn't be happier that he's gone.

My understanding is he had a good season 2 or 3 years back (hence the contract) and then was completely awful last year.

This isnt brutal trade as far as I'm concerned, but it is obviously based on what Matheson shows up and what corresponding moves Rutherford makes.

Some people just like to complain for the sake of complaining. Save that for when Rutherford trades Rust.

Which basically says he is a terrible decision maker but is athletic enough to mask those at times. Sound familiar?

I cant embed these fancy charts within a comment like all you fancy millennials with your dial-up internet....

but do a comparison of Matheson and Schultz on the SKATR chart. in that sense, this is a pretty big upgrade

Jesse Marshall threw up some fancy stats. Essentially Matheson is comparable to Gudbranson but provided more offense on a worse team.

Totally ok with this deal if JJ is off the Penguins roster one way or another.

Panthers are a fan base that is desperate for anything to cling to that resembles hope

It obviously wasnt all luck...but there was a ton of it.

That run took years off my life because the Pens, in 3 out of the 4 series and especially the 1st two, were majorly out played and chanced but would hang around in games due to crazy opportunistic scoring and lights out goaltending. This was very stressful viewing that went on for 2 months haha.

Normally I'd agree though he mentioned Hornqvist's "play driving ability" as a positive so....losing some credibility points there.

It’s definitely a poop for poop trade but I definitely think we got the worse end of the poop here. There is a microscopic chance that maybe Matheson could pull it together on a better team due to physical gifts, but that is not something I’ll be holding my breath for. Also, I don’t at all believe for a second this is a precursor to a Johnson trade which makes this all that much more inexplicable.

One weird thing I saw on his SKATR chart, he was in the 86% on TOI against elites over the past 2 years. That's odd usage for a guy you sometimes healthy scratch.

This is really the only thing that matters. If JJ doesn’t play because of the deal, I’m cool with it. If he trades Petts because of this deal and Matheson and JJ are both in the lineup regularly, it’s a fail.

Funny thing , I remember after that cup win I thought it would have been the perfect time to do a mini-rebuild, New England Patriots style, and collect assets for guys at their high value mark

Too tempting to go for the 3-peat, but Murray, Kessel, Horn, Schultz, and a few others could have collected a haul and we'd be on the upswing with it right about now

Nobody is ever 100%, but he's someone who really complies a lot data and plenty of it can be open to interpretation as far as which stat is more valid than others.

They thought he was good hence the contract and realized he sucks this past season
