Yes, choosing the best team in the league to win the stanley cup is a bold move
- TheMussel

Hey, hey, hey. I also picked arguably the best goalie in the world to win the Conn Smythe and be good at his job.

This.

I can't see any other way to fit AP without severely depleting any notion of depth the Leafs currently have.

- mjones242

Even then, we’re not going to be able to make the upgrades and hold onto the pieces we need.

This is the one time when going after the guy that everyone is bidding for doesn’t work, unless there’s a big discount.

The Stars' defense had their worst game of the entire playoffs. Can't blame the Kruel Kazakh Khudoby
- AdamFrench

I always think looking at Khudobin, that he's good for at least 2 bottles of vodka/night.

i think nylander will need to pack his poop. if not, it would only leave us with an average of ~$2m/player for the rest of the roster.

but as much as i hate it - i think we are backed into a corner. need to move out marner's $10.9m. sucks, but it's the reality.

worst result will be if we ship out nylander this year and then realize in a year or 2 that marner still needs to be moved to add proper depth.

- Tumbleweed

Moving Marner, from a cap perspective, would make it easier to bring in Pietroangelo assuming he does sign here

If we sell off everything for Pietrangelo, even minor upgrades become too much and we run out of room for the contractural gymnastics ended for Rielly. We’ve always had some cap growth to help out.

Realistically, to sign AP and be able to make other adjustments and have pieces to address needs, we’re going to have to move Nylander, plus.

All that and we’re seriously constrained in going after other upgrades elsewhere- Perry, Maroon, etc.

- Canada Cup

Lets play this out ...

Hypothetically sign AP for 8 x 8.5.

Move Nylander in a trade that includes a young top 6 winger on an ELC.

If they carried a 7th Dman making 700k and Robertson as their 13th forward they'd have 1.75 milly leftover to sign two 4th liners.

It could work.

If they wanted to create more space moving Johnsson and replacing with Robertson would add another 2.5 to that leftover.

And/Or, move Freddy and replace him with a less expensive option could save another chunk of change.

Hypothetical (non specific) example ...

Sign and trade with the Blues. Leafs get AP at 8.5 over 8 years. Leafs owe the Blues a small sweetener. Leafs need to move Willy and get some young assets back. Blues like Willy (?) and need to replace some of Tarasenko's offense.

Willie for Thomas and some picks/prospects. That kind of thing if it's available could work.

I think if you can land AP for 8-8.5M you do it but you also clear out Willie and one of AJ or Kerf.

If you can't make a serious run for a Cup with a core of AM34/MM/Snake/Petro/Rielly in the next couple of years than you might as well blow it all up.

Having said that, Rielly could be re-upped if we sacrifice goalie dollars and run with a tandem and hope one of them catches fire. This strategy is also why I'm hoping the Leafs trade up in the draft and grab Askarov. He's not necessarily a slam dunk, but if he turns out to be NHL capable, he'll be on a very nice ELC that can help the Leafs maintain/acquire future depth in other areas.

I'm looking forward to joel878's head exploding when he signs with the Buds.

Of course, if he signs elsewhere than Joel will own my immortal soul. But that's okay, I can handle that.

...

Ha!

I don't hate Pietrangelo at all... I just hope that if he signs in Toronto it's at a reasonable number for even more reasonable term.

I also see that unlikely regardless of climate. Excited to see how it plays out either way!

the cost for getting AP on an 8 year deal according to Lebrun is a 1st...or maybe a 2nd. obv the 15th pick is crazy to get that done.

a 2nd...also feels steep

so you find a pic from years ago while he is in the off season.
nice way to fit your narrative.

Mike in basement made the pick.

Alex signs 7 x 8.25mil.

- aries1976

That makes sense then.

I'll give him benefit of the doubt that he thought Schneider would already be gone by 15th, and wrote up a big spiel on a guy rated in the second round and didn't want to make his work go to waste.

'Cause there ain't no (frank)ing way he's getting drafted 15th. It'd be insanely (frank)ing stupid.

Food for thought.

Lebrun says to watch for the 'sign and trade' with AP. Says it was discussed with JT and SS when they were in the market.

Maybe an option in this scenario (with whoever acquires him) because Blues obtain an asset, new team gets significant cap savings, and AP gets an extra year.

Relationship with Blues and AP probably determines whether it happens.

- The Law

Like I said yesterday, Leafs will gladly trade them Holl for Pietrangelo.

Dubas is only a great GM in the minds of some Leafs fans and the younger hockey journalists (because 'same generation' and Dubas is a great communicator).

So far no indication that GMs are very much impressed by Dubas; starting with the Jim Gregory voting..

- MaximusAurelius

You know what the results of that voting tells me? That they're all morons because Lou winning it makes even less sense than Dubas winning it.
