That’s the thing, I really don’t think we do. Rutherford doesn’t trade with any kind of vision. He trades for players he like. Him liking Matheson does not mean that he’s specifically looking for an LD. I mean the word on the street for the past few weeks was RD and Tanev this came out of absolutely now where.

If the panthers really do hate his contract, they could take johnson to essentially reduce the term. I think that’s a very very very unlikely scenario though

That would certainly make more sense.

I would think that if we get Matheson that JR would already have a deal in place for Johnson, addition by subtraction.

This deal doesn't look it's going to work out. It's too bad. I had just figured out how to retool and end up with a better team...

Some questions and thoughts:

1. How does the expansion draft affect this trade? Horny has a full NTC this year and then a modified NTC starting next year. Matheson doesn't have any clauses this year but has a modified NTC starting next year, too. Does this change who the Pens can protect or have to protect / are not eligible for the expansion draft?

2. I am convinced that JJ is on the move. I don't think we re-sign Riikola with POJ close if the intention is to play JJ, who never gets injured, at 3LD, and now this? I don't like this move because it blocks a cheaper player who is probably just as good in Riikola and a promising player, who is even cheaper still, in POJ.

3. If the salaries and length of contracts are the same, would you rather have Matheson or C. Tanev? I know they play different positions and we have way more LDs and need a RD, but I'd still take Matheson in this scenario.

However this turns out, one thing is for sure. The door has closed on Rutherford. It is time for him to go. The Pens can still win but not with the lack of direction from the top. Making moves just to make moves isn't a winning formula.

He is a big bodied player who did play on the PK for Florida during his tenure. Maybe he could spell the end of the JJ Tenure with the Penguins
