No Trade Clauses Killing Tampa. Lawton Tweets:"This is yearr NTC will really hurt clubs. You would think logically the club will ask Johnson NTC, Gourde NTC, Killorn limited No Trade, Palat NTC & then out of options to reduce enough AAV to matter. These are tough ?'s."
Ek: First off. Great job getting this into one tweet, and to add to this, asking players who just won a Stanley Cup to waive their NTC is insanity! Brian Lawton

I feel that they will get one of them to waive but they aren’t waiving to come to Ottawa or some other weak team. They would want to go to a good situation and those teams will want to throw junk back at Tampa.

This was always going to become a problem and unfortunately matters were made much worse when the scheduled cap increase was canceled thanks to COVID.

The options aren't great but the other choice which would be a last resort is to waive one of the players with a full NTC and let them get claimed by whomever. I find it unlikely that nobody would want a Tyler Johnson for free... Also killorn is a good top 6 player with term at a solid number considering his production, his modified NTC will be no problem if it comes to that.

I agree its going to be a VERY short list of teams he will accept a trade to if they truly honor the players wishes. They can always leverage waivers to get the player to accept the trade.

Great job? Adhering to a character count limit? Ek is a grade three teacher, now.

According to the local beat writers he was asked but is reluctant. Negotiations are on-going.

I really do think the Lightning would threaten that they would be put on waivers if it came to that. The Lightning could also say well you will be getting fourth line minutes if you force us to keep you or worse yet popcorn duty.

I also find it hard to believe that a player would want to force a NTC against a team that clearly doesn't want them anymore. COVID screwed up the cap and it makes hard decisions all around.

It really stinks for the Lightning that its so FAST between CUP and decisions.

Tampa isn’t the only team that is being hurt by an NTC and also an NMC... There are probably 30 other teams that are being hurt, too. It’s the worst thing in the CBA. If it were up to me, I would get rid of both of those clauses.

I'm pretty sure you can't waive a player with an NTC or NMC. That would be too easy.

"A player with a no-trade clause (NTC) or no-movement clause (NMC - cannot be placed on waivers or sent to minors) must accept a move by waiving his clause in order to be traded."

That is why you dont give NTCs willy nilly. The players mentioned are not deserving of such clauses. This is also why you cant rely on a rising cap to fix your issues. You cant predict if something like COVID is going to axe it.

GMS have to leave themselves some wiggle room with the cap and not be at the cap ceiling every year.

Only NMC can't be placed on waivers. A NTC can be placed on waivers and taken by another team.

You can't waive a player with a NMC, but you can absolutely waive a player with a NTC. That's essentially the main difference between the two clauses.

When you have a current Cup to show for it, cap issues are well worth the trouble.

The Lightning's roster will shed a few complimentary players and the core will remain. They have some nice talent in the pipeline ready to step up on low salaries. A couple of players like Killorn and Cernak will end up being traded. Somebody might get bought out or offer-sheeted, but it won't be the end of the world or the end of the Lightning's status as perennial contenders.
