Yea my thoughts exactly but he's a guy we could use. I think hoffman would be good too, his d sucks but trotz should be able to get him on board there

lol We just lost Toews to cap, have 2 expensive FA's to sign, and this bumhole is dreaming about acquisitions.

Ummm...Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, or Detroit Red Wings??
- Puckin_Island

Barzal also has to actually sign the offer sheet.

You can probably take Buffalo out of the mix with about $13M in cap space and still having to sign Olofsson and Reinhart.

I have my doubts that the Red Wings would offer him a massive deal with a couple of their own important higher-end RFA's to sign and a ton of work to do next offseason.

That pretty much leaves Ottawa as the only team that could realistically make it happen and I'm not too worried about Barzal dying to play for a team rebuilding from square one.

It boggles the mind how people post talking poop and don't understand. And I'm pretty sure Lou tried to move out guys before moving Toews.

Obviously. I doubt he will, but he certainly will use the number in negotiations with Lou. Barzal has been a huge bargain and certainly wants a real payoff. He also may dream of going somewhere he can concentrate on pretty play offense. Who knows. The fact remains that until he's signed, he isn't ours. That's not a good position to be in with your last big star player because signing him may get harder, not easier.

Leddy is very tradeable, a puck moving dman w/2yrs left at reasonable cap hit, issue is Trotz really likes him over Teows.

Now, there’s no chance Leddy is going anywhere. I was just saying, previous to Monday, Devon Toews was easier to trade, and netting a nicer return, than Leddy. Otherwise, agree with your post.
- potvin05

Who can Lou trade to clear cap? So many desirable players with real cap have NT's. If it comes down to trading Leddy or losing Pulock, Leddy is gone, even if we have to retain some of his salary (cap). JMO.

So he's going to use an offer that he's not accepting as negotiating leverage?

The second bolded part is 100% factually incorrect. He's a restricted free agent. The Islanders own his rights, that's not up for debate.

Who said anything about leverage???? If Barz gets an offer millions above what Lou offers, what happens? Are you sure you know the answer? I don't, which is the point I'm making. Lou needs to sign him now, then worry about Pulock. Stop playing games, Louis.

I love how you guys add words, then argue with yourselves. It's an epidemic in here. COVID-7 I guess.

"Isn't ours" was overstated, but I'm sure you get the point about

needing to be signed to play. Holdouts and offer sheets do happen.

I'd love to hear what term you'd use to describe the act of using an outside influence to your advantage in a negotiation

Err....Barzal realizes he's worth more, and can get a bunch of his salary in signing bonus. No need to wave the offer sheet as leverage. Instead of dealing with what he can get him for, Lou has to deal with how much can he get him to walk away from. Barzal and his agent HAVE to be aware of covid, and signing bonus will be a big factor for them.

Sweet jesus, the dangers of letting a high talent, young player make the rounds is pretty damn obvious. But that boat has sailed. Risky play by Lou. Giving the 3 low end qualifying offers meant Lou was out of options. Something he did to himself by making some bad signings early on, then over estimating the Isles chances of winning this year.

I'm pretty sure Barzal doesn't need an offer sheet to determine what he's worth. That's what he pays his agent for.

I agree that the player and agent are well aware of Covid. That means they're well aware that almost nobody other than one big ticket UFA got paid this offseason. So since they're both professionals I'm sure they'll understand that the circumstances are going to put limits on what the Islanders can spend.

Giving out the QO's is literally standard operating procedure for all GM's that has to be done to retain their rights. It's not even remotely close to showing that anyone was "out of options". You couldn't possibly know less about what you're claiming.

I guess your stand is that high value RFA's are never signed until AFTER a QO?

Lou couldn't have made Barzal a REAL offer and sign him, then use cap slack to QO Pulock and Toews?

If you don't qualify your RFA's, they become UFA's.

See: Duclair, Anthony and Athanasiou, Andreas

I never said high value RFA's aren't signed until after a QO. I said doing what was literally necessary for Barzal not to turn into an unrestricted free agent is not even remotely close to being a sign that Lou was "out of options". It's boilerplate housekeeping that happens every single year.

This year happens to be one with a great deal of uncertainty around the financial situation of all teams, so I think it's quite a bit over-dramatic to act like Barzal not being signed by now is some sort of high-risk travesty.
