Done. I wish. It won't happen.

NYR really needs to move salary, and moving ADA w/ no salary coming back is a help....but they still have to move salary.
Maybe they take Cholo + Ras for B. Smith + ADA ......I don't think that would be bad for either side. The rags would have over $9.4M to sign Strome, Lemeiux, and Georgie, The only thing is a bit more clearance for the bonus overages and I don't know how that works. Of course there are those that say 2 prospects are too much....but I don't see it.

Nice write up. I’m in favor of agents taking the discount, without the player they get nothing. Soon the older veterans won’t need agents. |

I thought for sure Yzerman and Brisebois would've made a trade by now. |

I'd sooner barf up a lung than watch Brendan Smith wear the Red Wings uniform again. |

It’s still going to be a slog for a couple more years, but Yzerman looks to building something worthy of hope. Good things. |

Shoulda, woulda, coulda is gonna bite someone in da butt!
I still think things are gonna ease up a bit in the 2nd week of November. - HenryHockey
I’m still befuddled by Buffalo’s spending. They fired 30 staff, but did a 1 yr 8 mil on Hall. VGK spent a healthy amount on defense as well. Lehner taking 5 made a lot more sense once we found out he was going into surgery. That would have muddied up talks for sure.
The NHL budgeting is a stand alone issue. Players are locked into 20% escrow, so the other shortfall will come out of team budgeting. |

Thanks for that. It’s a messed up system. Marner’s agency gave him a huge discount so they could bring him in as a client. They then charge guys making way less more to make up. Backstrom and Ovechkin went without agents (though Ovi gives agent fees to his parents. Very cool). The problem right now is players could do their own comparables and be dead accurate, but the market has shifted drastically. What really makes the FAs angry is lack of signing bonuses. All the deals in the past few years that were majority bonus have way more take home. It’s just a different world and players can’t believe what they’re seeing |

Agreed. But hoping for a team that looks more competitive bit by bit. Last year was brutal |

Forgive my ignorance on the matter, but; do coaches and coaching staffs operate under the same collective bargaining agreements that the players do? And if so, are they eating some of esCROW as well? |

I think the NYR's would do that trade in a heartbeat, but not the Wings. I don't believe that ADA is worth so much that we would need to give up 2 decent prospects AND get stuck with Smitty and his contract too. |

No. Different contracts. They fall under ownership. Escrow is the device used to true things up to 50/50 revenue. Players salaries always end up being more than 50% of HRR, so they pay back that “overage”. With the current shortfall, a true up could be more than half of player revenue, so there was an agreement to freeze at 20%. |

I don’t doubt that hall on Eichel’s wing could be something very special. Just seems like a huge investment for a one year. You may be right. Get to the playoffs. |

Interesting point. If NYR needs bailout (as TB does) it won’t come cheap. GMs digging in |

Along the lines of Buffalo reaching for the playoffs...
What are everyone's thoughts on a possible playoff push for the Wings this year? Let's just hypothetically say for a second that the planets align and this group surprises everyone by gelling as a group and pushing for a playoff spot. As much as we clearly still see holes and deficiencies in this current lineup and are certainly not expecting this to happen, crazier things have happened.
So my question is this... if this was to be the case, should we be excited for the success or disappointed that it takes us out of next year's lottery and may slightly derail the rebuild? |

I think everything would have to go right for the Red Wings to make the playoffs next season. It's not impossible. But it's very unlikely. I do believe this Red Wings team is better than what will be expected. We'll steal some points from teams not respecting us.
Jimmy Howard is no longer going to be able to cost us games. We have more options at 2C now even if it's by committee. We no longer have pylons like Ericsson, Bowey and Daley embarrassing themselves on defense. Lazy slugs like Abdelkader and Green only cared about collecting a paycheck. The overall attitude will be much better.
Hopefully this Red Wings team can get off to a good start. Instill some confidence. Stevie says he wants to compete. I think this team will. But we'll most likely be losing more close games than winning them because we still have an overall lack of talent. But that's ok. As long as I see progression then I'm good.
This team will be built through the draft. But the culture can start now. A team can always work hard. We still have a big handicap behind the bench in Blashill and that's what worries me the most. In my opinion he hurts this team more than he helps it. He's not a bonafide NHL head coach. I hate rewarding failure. |

It’s hard to say. This team could double the amount of points they took last year and still be dead last. It’s a long climb, but things are going to be a little better. |

Each year I look at teams who might make it in. Someone has to improve or decline to make that jump. Red Wings are improved, but has anyone in the conference declined so much that we can pass them? Columbus is well coached, Ottawa is in a similar boat as us, Boston, Toronto, Tampa Bay all have elite talents (yes we beat Boston a few times last year). Montreal? It’s just hard to say we could leapfrog the top teams in the coming season. Just my opinion, and G does a fantastic write up here. Thanks guys |
