When Doc left in 2011, it felt similar to any of the 'dynasty' players leaving. Doc had been piece of the organization where we knew we among the best. Glad he went on to bigger and better things but I've missed him.

Doc was great! He somehow made watching hockey even more enjoyable. And as a Devils fan there were so many great moments, but with acknowledged recency bias. "Henrique, its over!" still resonates.

Wish him all the best in retirement!

Sad to see Doc call it after so long, gonna be different not being able to hear him call games again! A true legend for sure!

I have seen numerous criticisms of Doc, but I'll never voice any of them. He is just a wonderful person and a very skillful play by play illustrator, and lover of the game! Have a great retirement, and I'll see you in the HOF!

I can't stand him as a hockey announcer...shrill...hysterical...are 2 words that come to mind...I would give my left arm to have the sportsnet announcers from Canada call the playoffs annually...hear that NBC?

Is it because he reminds you of the Devils Cups?

While I wish Doc the best in his golden years, this is a tough pill to swallow. Whether it was Devils broadcasts (I'm a Pens fan, but would watch the Devils broadcast for Doc's play-by-play) or with NBC for the simple fact of how animated and excited Doc would get. I'm also legally blind and he always painted a beautiful picture of the action on the ice.

Congrats to Doc on an amazing career.. listening to him call the Devs games and many others as well showed just how much of a grade A gentleman he was. Calling the final minute in the 95 Stanley cup finals gave me goosebumps for sure.. wishing him all the best in retirement!!!

I met Doc and Chico a couple of times while hanging out in the Fire Lounge at the Rock. Class acts, the pair of them. I loved his call of the game. As a person that has traveled a fair bit during my professional career, I cannot even image the rigors of an NHL travel schedule. Living out of a suitcase is tough on the body, even if you're a younger man. I'm sure Doc will miss being around the players, but there is nothing like waking up in your own bed.

Am I the only guy who really didn't care for his style or pace?? Doc wasn't bad just not really my style. Being a west coaster I always preferred Kenny Albert or my favorite Sam Rosen as play by play..

Anyways.. A true legend. Cheers Doc.

The Devils Should do the right thing and hang his name in the Rafters. Instead of a number like the Retired players have, use a Microphone.

Hated when he left, I haven’t enjoyed games as much since then.

OK, so......this goes WAY back in time. I grew up in Port Huron, MI (about 70miles north of DET). We had a minor league hockey team (IHL); the Port Huron Flags. They played at McMorran Place arena in downtown PH. "Doc" came to WPHM and called the games. Which memory, you ask?? MANY nights curled up in bed with a small transistor radio in my pillow-case so Mom wouldn't see/hear it, listening to Doc call Flags games from Dayton, Kalamazoo, Ft. Wayne.....all over the IHL and falling asleep with his voice in my ear. Doc was amazing to listen to. In fact, this year calling the SCF games, his 1st jersey displayed in his home studio was a Port Huron Flags jersey!!!!

Met him several times and one of the most gracious and insightful men.

I guess one of the memorable events was a brawl (yeah, the IHL was famous for bench-clearing brawls...) where 2 Flags players were toe-to-toe with a couple of Dayton Gems guys. Doc was calling the fight and noticed the 4 who started fighting had disappeared...upon further inspection, he found them in the walk-way from the bench to the locker rooms….and didn't miss a beat. He also coined the "French Collection", Rick Menard, Bob Souve', and Rickie Suek (THINK I got the 1st names correct...).

DOC: If you ever see this; You and your family were/are amazing folks. You provided a young kid some of his most-enduring memories calling the Flags games. Those memories, your voice, your grace set a bar that all shall try to meet, but only a select few shall ever attain. Thanks, Doc. For more than you'll ever know.
