Stewie,
Every day I get a little older, I hear someone passed or retired, that reminds me of times gone by, silenced forever. Doc is one of those reminders. When I knew he was doing the play by play, I knew it was going to be a must watch game. He was that good.
With so many younger people being indoctrinated, and/or brainwashed into group think and political correctness, your blog reminds me of people and times where individuality, hard work, and self reliance, were traits which made those who possessed them successful.
Your relationship and interactions with players while you officiated, and Doc’s stories of his interactions made us connect with the game. That is lost today, and sad, because young people never got to experience it. Therefore, they have no reference to compare and contrast.
Remember Bill Clement with Gary Thorne broadcasting on ESPN during a 5 OT playoff game, where after every scoreless OT, Bill took off another piece of clothing til he had his tie around his head? He was admonished by Network executives for that, and soon gone, along with the NHL on ESPN.
That to me, was the start of sterility and personality removal of those in the game. Hell, we can’t even get a decent interview anymore. Nothing is gleaned from an interview, before, during, or after the game anymore. It’s the same politically correct canned answers, so as not to offend or upset anyone. Ergo, the loss of personality.
Doc made a successful transition to the modern era, while giving us a connection to the past.
His voice will surely be missed!
Thanks for your blog remembering one of the great ones! |
