You take Bean and laugh all the way to the bank. CAR has seriously mismanaged Jake Bean - signing Gardiner made zero sense. He'll be Seattle's Shea Theodore.

Bean should be exempt from selection as he will be a second year NHL player. All 1st and 2nd year NHL players are exempt.

Bean is not exempt. Though at first glance it's fair to think he would. Bean was drafted in 2016, and had his ELC deal slide through his first two seasons. Since he has played in two full professional hockey seasons with the AHL and will be an RFA at the end of the 2020/2021 season.

Carolina is the first team where there are a ton of options and different ways to go. Heck, I could see them getting Staal to waive and going with 4 defenders protected. I was somewhat surprised to see Neiderreiter protected, even if I like him as a player.

So far Seattle is off to a pretty darn good start.

Carolina has a lot of good players available for the Kraken to select.

Jake Bean will not be exempt.

But Warren Foegele will be protected. Nino Niederreiter and Morgan Geekie will not.

I think they will protect Necas. But you are right, plenty of options here.

Seattle is going to get a damn good player from the Canes... probably the best so far in the expansion draft to date.

Still annoying as (frank) that Vegas is exempt from this

Not only do they not have to worry about losing a player, they can also be in the market to make trades with teams who are worried about losing a decent player for nothing. Plus these teams can use Vegas as leverage when negotiating deals with Seattle.

Ideally Vegas is in cap hell again next year so they don't be in a position to bend over more desperate GM's.

The exemption rules do not state a player must have 2 years or less in the NHL. It states 2 years or less pro experience. They wanted to avoid having teams park prospects in the AHL (in a practical sense).

Why is Hamilton protected.???? He's a UFA after next season. Protect Bean or Skeji instead.

I believe the criteria we were to work with is current rosters. Hence Hamilton being protected (under the assumption his considered to be re-signed). This list was tough with so many guys Seattle will be eager to pluck. But when making this list, I considered Carolina to be in “win now” mode rather than sell off pieces for picks and waste the best years of Svechnikov, Aho, TT. As for Jake Bean, the same logic played in the decision to expose him. Further to that, AHL success does not always translate to NHL success. Sami Niku is a prime example. Still too early to call him a bust, but the AHL defenseman of the year with 54 points in 76 games has yet to translate his game to the NHL (total of 9 points over 47 NHL games). This isn’t to say he can’t be a stud on the back end, but if I’m the Carolina GM I’m going to capitalize on the assets I currently know rather than give up a known asset on a prospect who may or may not have what it takes. Nobody is right or wrong here for a few years, but common perception is the Bean should be protected. Personally, I’d protect Foegele before Bean. But I’m a jaded Jets fan at heart with unrealistic expectations of Niku that didn’t come to fruition in his first couple of years.

OH I see you have devised a rape list. You know the same type of list the Knights used to take key players way from other teams.... (YES I said Rape list b/c that is what it is, forcing teams to give up the goods)

Vegas forcefully ran a train though the NHL, now its Seattle’s turn and Vegas gets to watch from the closet

Maybe... More likely Fleury if we're being honest, but I could see it.

counter point.... Skjei or Fleury have such a strong year the Canes go:

Aho, Svech, Turbo, Staal, Slavin, Pesce, Dougie, and Skjei / Fleury.

losing Tro would be a risk but I dont see us keeping him long term.

Maybe we swap a couple of guys like Bean and Tro before the expansion draft to teams with expansion draft open slots for futures.
