Nashville's problem had nothing to do with 'grit.' A few years ago the problem was that they had an elite back end and near elite goal tending (at least in the regular season) coupled with a good but not great forward corps. Now the D isn't as good the goal tending is mediocre at best and the forward corps is not even as good plus a locker room cancer has been added. The window is pretty much closed and Poile, who has always been overhyped, is flailing about trying to keep it open just a crack. All with a coach who doesn't have near the track record of the last two guys. It's a bad situation which seems in some weird way to cast a pall over whatever decent forward gets added to the mix. Given how insufferable the poser Nashville fans have acted it's not an unentertaining situation to watch play out.

Dom Luszczyszyn took his usual very objective numbers based look at what they did this offseason and his conclusion isn't pretty:

Nashville Predators

Wins Added: -0.8 wins

Salary Added: -$4.9 million

In: Mark Borowiecki, Nick Cousins, Brad Richardson, Matt Benning, Luke Kunin

Out: Mikael Granlund, Craig Smith, Kyle Turris, Nick Bonino, Austin Watson, Yannick Weber

Nashville saw some of the biggest upheaval this offseason and the Predators are likely worse for it. On the plus side, the team solved its third pairing problem by bringing in Mark Borowiecki and Matt Benning. But that alone isn’t enough to make up for the sizeable downgrades up front. Losing Craig Smith and Mikael Granlund severely diminishes the team’s winger depth, while swapping Nick Bonino for Luke Kunin is likely a short term loss given Bonino’s play last season. The team cut salary but it appears they’ll have to fight for the playoffs next season.

Certainly hard see them as better with changes so far. Exciting to give their young players a chance. Tolvanen and Tomasino are top 6 players when they are ready. Would think Hoffman would be signed if Management liked him. Can see Poile bringing in an elite player at the Trade deadline now that he has Cap Space. Great too that the bottom 2 of the Defense pair is improved.

As a Predators fan ...I actually agree with most of what you wrote.
Curious though..Whom do you think the Cancer is ?

He's likely referring to Duchene. Don't forget Poile started stalking him back when he was still in Colorado.
