What did the Flyers pay Sandin? Seems by going out and getting him, they really expected a bottom 6, if not middle 6 player out of the deal, no?

He appears to be playing well back home.

My initial take was they really expect this kid to play.

$792,500 for a one-year contract (ELCs are one year at his age) with a $70K salary on the AHL end of the two-way deal. Not a direct comparison as I like Sandin more as a player than the other guy, but it's somewhat like the Roman Lyubimov experiment of 2016-17. If it works out, great. If not, it was a small investment and low-risk signing.

Bill,

What's Ratcliffe's story. You don't mention him as potentially fighting for a spot. I thought, he was on par (style, development) with Allison. I don't follow the Phantoms, just noticed that he didn't have any points last year - injury? Two years ago, he put up big numbers in the OHL. Rookie with Phantom, was just ok - but that's expected.

He was healthy. Struggled mightily after Rookie Camp ended -- was in over his head in training camp (I've talked about the morning when Frost and Ratcliffe were sent out head-to-head in battle drills against Couturier and Giroux, and got eaten alive, as AV knew would happen). Struggled in the first quarter to first half of the AHL season. Got moved down the lineup to a checking/PK role and started to settle in.

Gordon said Ratcliffe was the Phantoms most improved player by the end of the season compared to where he started at the beginning. He thinks the offense will come around in time at the pro level, too. Ratcliffe said that he sees his own future more in the type of role that he played in the second half of his rookie season than as the big goal-scorer he was in his Draft +2 year playing on Suzuki's line.

So, no, Ratcliffe isn't really challenging for an NHL role at this point. He's going to probably spend another year in the AHL -- assuming there is an AHL season -- and then they'll see where he is come 2021-22.

My guess is that they are relatively confident that Patrick will be good to go whenever the season starts or they would have already made a move.

1986: Rookie goaltender Ron Hextall ran his record to 5-1-0 as the Flyers down the Minnesota Wild at the Spectrum, 4-1.

Bill - Thank you for another informative article. Regarding the quote above, I don't believe the Wild were around in 1986... I think the Minnesota NHL club at the time was still the North Stars.

I agree and I try not to over analyze these things, but if you follow flyers players on social media, a lot do them have been shouting Patty out in posts. I think the guys know he’s coming to play as well. I know people wanted a big new addition to the team, but a healthy Oskar and Nolan Would be major, major additions.

A healthy (and consistently productive) Patrick would be a big difference maker, especially given favorable matchups behind Couturier and Hayes. But I am pretty skittish about RELYING on that to happen. I'd feel more comfortable with a one-year insurance policy, such as Haula. If Patrick is fine, then Haula is also a viable top 9 option at wing.

Frankly its been nuts some of the negativity surrounding Patrick from some of the people in here.

As a migraine sufferer since my teenage years (with 7 concussions between age 13 to 19 being a contributing factor) I was able to get it under control at a relatively young age (22-23) and have been getting by with minor migraines and maybe one or two major debilitating ones a year. I do this with diet, medication and also (and this is a big deal) recognizing the signs that one is on the horizon and "heading" it off before it becomes a major problem.

I did this as a regular guy with a general practitioner doc who didn't have the benefit of a billion dollar sports franchise watching my every step day after day. I've been able to play as a relatively successful musician for going on 30 years with all the lights and noise associated with that.

So the talk from some about Patrick, (a 22 year old kid with the best medical care in the world) having his career being over is ridiculous.

your probably correct in "relying" on Patrick but if the Flyers go into the season with 3-4 million in cap space, even with Ghost still here, the Flyers have the ammunition and cap space to address a failed Patrick outcome if and when it arises.

He’s in scrimmage. Some play is better than no play and what’s important is the person. What if he can’t play again? Is he a bust or is this a shame for a young guy to not see through his dream?

I always loved that sweater

There’s ugly, and then there is ‘hockey ugly’. Certain jerseys shouldn’t look good if someone explains it to you blindly, but it just works. It fits the sport. The old Minni N fits that description, the Detroit Wheel is an example, and frankly so is our own Flying P in bright orange. It just WORKS.

Kinda like true rock voices. Plant’s voice wouldn’t go along with most genres. Geddy Lee’s pipes sure aren’t makin the choir. But when it comes to rock n roll, they are exactly what the doctor ordered.

Tell you what, it would be a shame to pay a 3rd line center that much money (even though the guy brings it), but if Frost earns that slot, we’ll all be very happy Philly fans

Yea, really it's a bunch of guys who have no expertise or knowledge about it. I'm in the group with no knowledge so I default to the experts on that. I think for sure he is going to give it a shot but I still think there is a lot of unknown at this point. If he can hold up under an NHL season. I honestly believe if there is one player that benefitted from the season pause and the time off currently, it's Patrick.

Just from my own experience, I just find it unfathomable that he doesn't have a long productive career. Of course this can hinge on whether he gets a bad knee injury or something like that. But I just cant see it being because of migraines.
