Tocchet is my all time favorite Flyer. From a kid's perspective he always got the timely goal and if someone needed to be put in their place, you put Tocc out on the ice. I still remember one goal where he was at the front of the net, a shot from the point hit him in the face, the puck dropped to his feet, and he tucked it in. That goal just summed up the toughness it took to play hockey and immediately taught me to never quit on a play, no matter what happens. He's also the reason I've worn 92 my whole beer league "career" (there are too many people wearing 22). Congrats on the honor Tocc. Thanks Mr. Meltzer for another great read. |

With Lindros and LeClair in the Flyers HOF - what about Mikael Renberg? To me, the Legion of Doom was such a force during the mid-90's that all three of them should be recognized, even if Lindros' & LeClair's individual numbers were better. |

Love Renny. One of my all-time favorite players (and people) but no. If not for the injuries that derailed him, he'd probably have had that type of career but he was never the same player again after the 100% core muscle tear he suffered 2 and a half years into his career. |

Bernie said something like, Flyers organization has no class (after being traded).
Tocchet said he was going to parade the penguins cup down Broad St (after being traded)
I don't think they are quite the same. |

Thanks Bill.
If you've never read Hobey Baker's bio, I highly recommend it. Seems like he was a class guy in addition to being an amazing athlete. |

Hey Bill,
Do you think any of the guys from this year's draft have a chance at the 10 game call up at the start of season? |
|

Combination of beating the snot out of people and scoring goals. The best to so it in Philly. |

Bernie said, "To have a championship team, you need an organization with class, and that's where the Flyers are definitely lacking."
Tocch said after the Pens won the Cup, "Thank you to the best hockey fans and the best hockey organization in Pennsylvania."
Both statements said from emotion in the moment. Any hard feelings faded fast. The reality is that Rick loved his years in Philly which included two playing stints as well as a stint as a broadcast studio analyst (for which he drove 6 hours across state a few times per week).
He also loved his playing time with the Pens, too, and why wouldn't he? It was a great time to be there.
But I can tell you firsthand that he looks back on Philly as the place he grew up as a pro, made lifelong friends (both teammates and off-ice friends), had a blast coming back to in 2000 and who's only regret is not winning a Cup in the Keenan years, 1989 or 2000.

I get it Bill. I recall the parade comments are right after the trade, not after winning the cup, so yes there was a lot of emotion and it shows how much he cared about playing for the Flyers.
Bernie's comments are directed at the organization, Tocchets are more directed at the fans, at least that's how they come off.
I'm sure he realizes it now, what a great situation the Flyers traded him into, otherwise he would'nt have those 2 rings.
Has he ever apologized for those comments? He'll have a chance at the induction. |

I still own that program from 91 that has Tocchet and Ricci wearing jeans and leather jackets looking like "Rebels with a cause". |

I just wanted to say a big "Thank You" to the Philadelphians who helped to preserve our democracy (for now).
Edit: I don't want to hijack the thread, so no need to reply.
Also, I love Tocchet and hard-nosed players like him. It's one thing the Pens are missing and have not had for a while now. I know the game is changing, but you still need guys like Tocchet. Pens' management and coach disagree, unfortunately. Pretty sure we're the softest team in the league now.
Stay safe out there. |
