What happens with a cancelled season? Do contracts still expire? Are they just pushed back a year?

Owners worried about losing money this year will probably not like the lost money in the next few years if they don't have a season.

I’d think it burns a contract year. Duration versus money is my reasoning.

Yes I agree it will not get any better.

When it comes down to money I agree.
The fans & the game is more important.
A resolution is needed asap & both sides need to understand to take the hit.

Expansion draft plus compliance buyout next year. Cap goes back down to 70M a season?

Tampa Bay's cap situation for next season.

13 contracts signed with 6.2M available. They wouldn't be able to sign 10 players to league min and get under the cap.

I wish Van could win a cup.

Yeah
The game's not going to change and the fan will come back.
I hope Covid had made the owners realize they have to get rid of guaranteed contracts.

Idk but something has to happen in these unusual times. Sports is not immune to all of this & cannot think otherwise. Hockey needs to adjust accordingly & I don’t see it being a quick nor easy to sort & get agreement on. Imo the players will need to forgo much they had.

The bonuses are 1st to be dealt with imo.
The JT contract is a prime example. Too much by miles & needs to be curtailed to lesser level.

Somewhere I read a suggestion players contracts are paid in a % of cap. That would be more resilient in high & low times versus a hard cash number.

But, if you ask me about the jeopardy of the season. Listen, the NHL does not have the benefit of the NFL and NBA where the TV money is so significant that it can cover off your expenses, you can afford to play without fans. The NHL does not have that luxury.

So when you ask me if the NHL season is in jeopardy, I can definitely see a scenario where there is no NHL hockey for the 2020-2021 season.”

Short season and hybrid bubbles might be able to cover the season. TV deals are about 600M. Last year the two bubbles combined cost 80M for play ins and playoffs.

Edit: Corrected 820M from TV

Hockey is a split though compared to other sports. The excessive $$ just isn't there like it is with other sports. No room for error in this situation.

NFL revenue was 17B or something in 2018. NHL's was 4B

Updated from 2019
League Revenues (bn) TV revenue Ref
National Football League $16.9 $9.1bn
Major League Baseball $10.7 $2.1bn
National Basketball Association $8.8 $2.6bn
National Hockey League $5.1 $820m
Major League Soccer $1.2 $90m
Canadian Football League $0.2 $50m

Yes a short season is pretty obvious. Hybrid bubbles afford better covid control & double headers played. Comes down to sacrifice & how badly players understand they are no more special than the average person. Do I trust the owners no but the players are the game & need to remember the fans are the meal ticket.

Only option left to have a season been saying it for a while. But owners want to shave upfront costs some more. Players don't bite the bullet they will be facing a huge downslide.

Players won't do Bubbles Mini...I talked to Sutter and Kris Russel personally on this as they are working out at the rink. Another option will present.

its hybrid not full lock down bubbles. Will allow for family time. But if Sutter doesn't like it that's great they can suspend him and save some cap.
