It's certainly an odd announcement. I am curious how serious the eye injury is vs the fact that he didn't want to be that guy who is traded with a 1st attached to him.

Regardless, great guy, great player, loved watching him.

Now you'd better ink Barz to an 8 year deal asap!!! If you sing some 2-3 year deal, you'd better be prepared for him to reassess his future with the isls, and all those aging contracts.

This is strange. Is he going on LTIR for the rest of his career or is he actually retiring.

I'd be surprised if he legit retired as he'd lose 12 million.

Boychuk has always been a class act. He joined the Islanders when it was not considered cool to be an Islander. We as Islander fans are privileged too have had such a person/ player wear the orange and blue. All the best to him and his family.

The headlines are misleading on this as its an injury forced retirement just like Lupul. So he gets his cash and Lu gets space. I am waiting for Leddy or Ladd to slip on a bar of soap next. I honestly wonder how the league can keep allowing this. Smid wasnt medically cleared to play in the NHL, and has played 3 years in the KHL. How about watching his interview on twitter... it's very obvious he doesn't want to quit playing. Johnny is and always has been a class act. I wish him the best as I'm sure all Bruins and Islanders fans do.

He can't play with a visor or anything? I like Boychuk. Thought he was a solid player. Regrettable he can't keep going. I do find it a tad odd though. Hopefully he returns again after healing some more.

One he was wearing a visor, two he has permanent damage to his eye, three him retiring is the best outcome for us.

I'll have to look into that, we are skating at 9am tomorrow till 10 amd then we have a stripper from 10 to 12 I'm gonna show up the Thanksgiving buzzed and with a loaded pistol

Sad to see Boychuk forced into retirement with an eye injury. Maybe he thought he could play through it and came back just to realize his eye wasn’t right. Terrible. Saw this happen to MacInnis
