Ceci is preventing them from getting depth? You do realize you need depth at defense too, right? |

For every bad contract (Matheson, Tanev, Sceviour, Ceci) they have an absolute bargain (Sid, Geno, Tanger, Guentzel)... And is Ceci even that bad of a contact? Yes, of course he's a sh!t player (relative to peers) but 1 year/1.5 mill isn't the worst. |

This blog is kind of forcing things. We are in good shape I'd say. For $1-1.3M we could find a bargain for the 3rd line like Haula or Granlund. We'll see.
Ps. We could use Brandon and Teddy a little bit more. They deserve it. McCann will get a lot of ice time. |

Adding one of the worst defensemen in the league doesn't equate to having depth at D. |

Sure is when they didn't need him at all and could have used that 1.5mill elsewhere. |

I feel like they could still take a flyer on Andreas Athanasiou to add a little scoring and speed to that bottom six at a relatively low cap hit. The best defense is a good offense, and stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but the bottom six could use a little more of said offense.
I’d love a Granlund, Hoffman, or even Haula but I’m just not sure they’re willing to move the cap to acquire one of them at this point. |

Honestly could be a slam dunk. It makes too much sense to not at least consider it. |

I’m surprised things have been so quiet in him in general rumors. |

They also could have spent half on someone else. |

i just dont understand GMJRs moves. He saw how the bolts won the cup. Does he think the way this team is constructed it could compete with them? and why sign ceci? what was that about? so matheson AND ceci?
if he were to actually look at the cup years in 2009 there was TK-staal-cooke and in 16-17 there was HBK. Both cup teams had a 3rd line that could score. and now......the 2020-21 line is not much different from last years horny-whoever the flavor of the day is to play center- marleau for the 3rd line AKA the left overs line because sully didnt want to break up that 4th line.
I get trading horny. i am glad they bought out JJ. but then he kept 1/2 of bjugstads contract, got matheson and scevior and then signed ceci. just terrible. |

Here’s a novel idea- how about a healthy roster for the first time in ages? |

I think that good third lines are the difference between good teams and Cup-winning teams.
However, the first two lines, the defense, and the goaltending are still more important and you can't even have a good team without them all doing well. They did not do well in the last playoffs and the first two lines and defense at least were not always consistent in the last regular season. The team still has to focus more on these.
Also, good third lines involve a good bit of luck and rarely last more than a season (like "catching lightning in a bottle"). The Pens are always trying out new third lines and perhaps will get lucky this season with the large number of forwards GMJR signed.
I think the Matheson deal is the riskiest in the history of the team. It could end up screwing over the team worse than both the Scuderi and JJ deals due to its length. If it does that should be it for GMJR. |

I will be pleased as punch if Matheson is simply an overpayment, i.e. Brandon Tanev. If he's anywhere near the JJ spectrum this team is toast. There's a big difference between not having the money to shore up needs yet getting solid play out of your roster and getting poop play and having no room to spend to fix it. |

Less luck is needed when the 3rd line is built around skill and not chance ala the Pens new 3rd line.

Poulin working out would be huge. If they can sign Kovy then a Kovy-McCann-Poulin line could potentially be VERY good. Tojo mentioned that Poulin has actually played more RW.
