You got it right.
Dubi on CBJ LTIR, no real benefit to the Jackets. But he does have value as a trade chip. A couple high picks, and a prospect would be nice !!

Or you could double the get. Trade the contract to someone like Vancouver and take someone who doesn't contribute as well. Double prospect pickup

I can see this happening but only when the season is about to restart and someone gets desperate.

Plus you could do it for someone who's only on the books for one more season so you're not tied down

I only have a loose understanding of the LTIR rules but I don't think a first time LTIR candidate like Dubinsky is of any use to a team cause they can't be placed on LTIR until the season begins.
So a guy like Dubinsky isn't of value but an actual LTIR player who's already been on it for years like Clarkson and Horton were to the Leafs cause they created offseason space for the Leafs which was a cushion for them in case an offersheet was coming to Marner.

As a Jets fan I've seen it suggested that
Bryan Little could be of value as a trade chip cause of his LTIR status but he can't be placed on LTIR until the season starts so he has no value in this current offseason to anyone.

Another example would be Zetterberg, he's been on LTIR for consecutive years so he could be used like Horton and Clarkson were by some team if they acquired him.

As for the Jackets, they currently have plenty of space to sign Dubois and once the season starts and they have to have their lineup/roster set they can place Dubinsky on LTIR which will then open up some more cap space for Columbus to use however they want which I assume will be used to sign a free agent or two that they already have "handshake" agreements with that they'll sign them after they have the LTIR cap space opened up, a guy like Granlund for example who's been linked to the Jackets.

Anyway that's how I understood it but maybe I'm very wrong.. Lol

So how would trading him be any different for the receiving team than a team that's over the cap rn but would be under it once the season starts by putting someone on LTIR? (i.e. STL)

I may be wrong but I think it's that a guy who's already been on LTIR for years like Clarkson/Horton/Zetterberg, etc LTIR space can be used in the offseason cause it's known s
they're not fit to play whereas a first time LTIR candidate like Dubinsky can't have his cap space utilized until he's put on LTIR which is at the beginning of the season, it's the formality of it.

Like you could trade Dubinsky to St. Louis now but they couldn't use his LTIR space until the season starts, maybe that would work for them though but then why wouldn't Columbus just keep him and do the same thing? Unless getting a late round pick (thats all you'd get, no team is giving up anything of value)really appeals to the Jackets I don't see the point cause they could use that cap space themselves.

I'm pretty sure that's how it works but maybe I'm wrong. Do you get what I'm getting at?.. Lol
Idk maybe I'm way off but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.
