By all accounts the team is high on Mackey but for CAP reasons its been reported that Kylington and Nesterov have the upper hand on the 6,7 D spots.

Nesterov - $700,000
Mackey - $925,000

So does Gio become trade-bait if he fails to bring his game up? I heard he's in great shape but if age has finally caught up to him, do we leave him exposed in the draft (if thats possible with his contract) or try and trade him?

I think they should expose Gio but they won’t because they’re going to respect how much time he’s been with the organization and his huge role within the organization.

Any idea what his ceiling is? Bottom or mid pairing?

I think they should expose Gio but they won’t because they’re going to respect how much time he’s been with the organization and his huge role within the organization.

I guess it comes down to Gio, if he wants to chase a cup and feels Calgary is not a contender you trade him.

After 3 days of camp it sounds like Ward is looking at new roles for several players.
New line combos
New D pairings
Rasmus on #1 pp unit with 4 forwards
Gio and Tanev on #1 PK unit
If the team plays well (and Vali emerges) I think we will see Gio's TOI cut back 2-3 minutes per game and that should really help him.
If the expansion draft was today IMO either Gio or Tanev would be exposed but that a long way away......

No idea never seen him play but he was highly touted out of the NCAA and pretty much every team wanted to sign him.

Cheers man, just trying to figure out if he might be projected for middle or bottom pairing dman and if he is more of a defense first or a guy that could bring some offence.

Time will tell and lets hope he turns into a beauty. Next weeks intersquad game will be streamed so anxious to see how he looks.

Just to summarize from a couple interviews. One with Ward A few weeks after he signed and had been practicing with the team and one with Conroy in the offseason. Two-way Defenseman who’s good at everything. A lot closer to making the team than people expect.

Gio said pretty recently that he’s making it difficult in camp to leave him out of the starting lineup.

I think the days of organizational loyalty, right or wrong, are long gone. The Flames are not the Bruins and I'd like to think they would respect Gio's wishes but its a business and if an offer came in that would make this team better, I think he'd be at least asked if he would go...
