I agree completely. I think the majority of Jets fans become scared when we make trades because simply put, Chevy is not very good at making them. Asset management and talent evaluation definitely not his strong suits.

Considering the odds of landing anything of value in any round other then the 1st round in don't see the point in hanging on to all the draft picks every year, honestly starting to think it makes more sense to trade 2 to 4 draft picks every year to get established players, the 1st round picks should be held onto but some of the rest should be trade chips every season imo, obviously depending on where a team is at though, if you're a competitive team then yeah but if rebuilding then no.

This is 100% true. The Jets drafting record outside the first round is pretty abysmal. Goes back to talent evaluation!

It is pretty suspect, I get its maybe just luck but this mess on defense is the product of bad drafting, yes Buff quit and a couple of them left in free agency BUT after 7 years of drafting if all the internal options are Poolman and Niku well sorry but your drafting has sucked or at the very least isn't much better then anyone else's.

So do we think Poolman is signing an extension with the Jets? And is Pionk doing the same? If the answer is yes and with DeMelo signed for another three years after this one the right side of the defense would be set for awhile therefore it would make sense to trade one of RHD prospects Gawande or Kovacevic to fill a need now, they alone won't get you much of anything but say one of them combined with a disgruntled Roslovic and say a 2nd or 3rd round pick might, what could a package like that get the Jets? Is there a rebuilding team that might be interested in those three pieces for their future and what might they have that they would be willing to part with, if the Jets were to put together a package like that I'd hope it'd be for a player with a bit of term though.

This article speaks to everything I have been speaking about. If not for the high first round draft picks, the Jets drafting record would be even more abysmal. The high games played by their first round picks skews some of the results. Not surprisingly teams that have consistently picked outside the top 10 are not ranked as high!

Average GM'ing in markets like Toronto, Boston, Tamp Bay and other desirable markets can be overcome with overpaying for guys during trades and free agency. Average GM'ing in Winnipeg leads to disaster. For a small market franchise being in a "desolate" city like Winnipeg, we need exceptional GM'ing.

Let’s talk about this post. In 2015, Pittsburgh really wanted Little and offered up their 2015 first round draft, which the Jets could have gotten. Scheifele was on his way up and the Jets thought they had a good thing going. That first round draft pick went to Edmonton than the Island and ended up being Matt Barzal. Hindsight is 20/20, however every hockey analyst was speaking of how deep this draft was and Chevy at that time had a pretty good record of drafting in the first round.

Dustin Byfuglien could have been traded after the 2019 season in order to try and appease Trouba. The worst they could have gotten for Buff would have been a first round draft pick. The worst case scenario, well we have all witnessed it.

Brandon Taney, agreed too expensive. However, Taney was placed in the line-up ahead of Roslovic, a guy that could have had more development and more time to showcase his skill.

Joel Armia: traded because the Jets thought they already had Paul Stastny signed. Stastny does not sign with the team and we essentially gave him away for free. Also used to cover up a Chevy mistake of signing Steve Mason.

Ben Chiarot: Have you noticed that good defencemen like Byfuglien and Weber like playing with him? Much like Erik Karlsson preferred having Mark Methot with him. Chiarot had an interesting view on Jets defensive systems. You should look for the article very interesting read. Montreal media and coaching cannot stop raving about him. I would take him on my team before Kulikov, Beaulieau, Sbisa, and any other junk you find out there.

Tyler Myers: if traded a year before would have easily yielded a first round draft pick. The Jets inability to deal with the Byfuglien and Trouba situations handcuffed them on making a decision on Myers. Perhaps the Jets could have signed him long term for cheap prior to him becoming a UFA. Myers really appreciated the organization for allowing him to care for his critically ill newborn. Plus he liked being here, which is a bonus.

Jacob Trouba: Everyone knew he wanted out. He acted like a self-entitled brat. Said he should be on the first pair, essentially saying he was better than Byfuglien. Wonder how that flew in the room? Could have traded Trouba a year earlier for perhaps a guy named O’Reilly. Trouba is far better than any other players that Buffalo got in the O’Reilly trade. This would have also prevented the Jets from trading away their own first round pick to get Hayes.

Petan: Highly decorated world junior hockey player. Had some value and could have at least yielded a second round draft pick or been a part of a package to bring in something bigger.

Roslovic: Two years ago TSN reporting that teams were ready to part with mid to late first round picks to get him. Now he’s worth nothing.

We clearly have different ideas on what asset management means and that is okay!

Where did you see or read that Pittsburgh offered their first round pick for Little? I'm not saying you're wrong but I've never seen or heard of that by any actual insiders

I remember on TSN one of the insiders on the day the David Perron was traded from the Oilers to the Penguins saying that Pittsburgh was originally interested in Little and had offered the Jets the same deal. I guess due to Jets being in a playoff position that year, they balked at the deal.

I think we read the article differently. Because I don't see how the Jets would rank higher than Tampa Bay on drafting outside the first round!

Probably true mostly because they don't trade or sign anyone and are nearly 100% reliant on filling out their roster with draft picks.

I would agree with the Jets ranking approximately 5th. They have drafted extremely well over the years despite some on here trying to find fault. However, I would never rank Edmonton as the top three in drafting. They were the joke of the league for many years after bombing on quite a few high first-round picks. Obviously, guys like McDavid were no-brainers so the only credit they should get is Draisatl. That's not enough to rank third.

Here is how I see the Jets players coming into this season :

Top line:

Sheif....still getting better and better
Ehlers....also still improving yr to yr , also getting stronger.
Wheeler....has likely peaked but its unfair to judge him on last year because he was once again thrown into a center role which is the most difficult position in hockey. You need to cover both ends of the ice and then some. He is a much better player at RW. He will have a good year now he's back at his natural position (which takes a lot less energy )enabling him to fly once again on the wing.

2nd line:

Connor - Also still improving and getting stronger. Speed, great shot , and a magician with the puck.
Statsny - Definitely aging which is why he was signed for only one year. Makes it up with smarts and positioning. A good fit on this line but his decline is starting to show. Its likely his last year as a 2nd line center.
Laine - Stronger , faster, smarter. Showed up in camp to play. Too bad we might lose him after this season.

3rd Line

Lowry - I'll call him a neutral. Might see some slight upside at best. Not a shooter or a passer but need his brawn.
Copp- Improved every year. No reason why we won't see more upside again this season
Appleton - I'm not sure of he will be the third on this line but he is also young and improving. Harkins fits well here as do several other players. Harkin is also still demonstrating lots of upside. I still miss Tanev.

4th line
Could be any of Thomspon , Lewis , Vesalainen, Harkins, Gustaffson, Perreault. The bottom line though is that these guys will all be competing with each other so will be giving absolute maximum effort on each and every shift. This can't be a bad thing. I think we have a better 4th line because of it.

Defense

I'm not going to go through each one of them individually. DeMelo is still young and improving, so is Poolman, who I think has tremendous upside. All in all, I think the Jets D will be an improvement on last year.

The bottom line here is that I want to point out to all the posters on here who have been doing nothing but bashing and bashing pretty much every Jet player on here that I think this team will have a very good season because I see a lot of upside everywhere I look. Our young core is still improving and getting wiser. The Blackhawks dynasty was built with a similar core of players who eventually knew their systems so well that they finally began to operate as one cohesive unit. This is what is being built here. While we do not know what may happen with Laine, the rest of the top six will be intact for several more years to come. The only change may be Perfetti in a year or two. In a year or less Heinola will also be in the mix. I see a very bright future for the Jets so I'm quite shocked at all the complete nonsense I've scanned on here throughout the off-season. Be a fan and enjoy your team because there are a lot of other organizations out there that are complete Sh1T Shows. We are privileged to have such an exciting team to watch.

P.S. I am not part of the Jets organization despite some of you think. I'm just a guy who knows the game in and out and looks at things in a positive way. The two other regular guys on here that also know this game really well are Ross and Benny ( IMHO)

The fact that Edmonton ranked high means I read the article right. They talked about ranking based on games played by all draft picks between a select time. The article makes little mention of any players the Jets drafted outside the first round. Seeing as to how low Chicago and Washington who for the most part have not drafted in the top 10 but still won cups says lots about this article.

Perhaps your most important line "be a fan and enjoy your team." So true. Win or lose, enjoy the action - and let's hope for success. Remember only one team wins the SC each season.

Pretty much agree on your assessment of team and players. Probably have same feeling for Poolman, could have big season - IF he can stay healthy. I'm not sold as much as the rest of you on DeMelo, but that could change, he seems well respected and an effective 3rd pairing player.

I still believe we are only one top-pairing d-man away from being a top contender. As well, with Dubois on block, he is a "must have" in my opinion. But not for Connor, Scheifele, Wheeler, Ehlers, or a 1st round pick. After that? All in play!

Anyways it's about time to drop the puck, hope to continue to enjoy all your various assessments during the season! Go Jets!

Since we are all being so charitable, Grahamzky makes my shortlist of favourite posters. Always thoughtful, often unique, fresh takes on Jets.

I really like Dubois as well - think he is already the real deal with significant upside still to come. I have no trouble trading this year's first round pick... scouting reports will be full of holes and much less reliable than years past. I would trade away every pick this year if there is a return that helps. I would add Helly and Morrissey to the 'do not trade list' in spite of an off year for Jomo.

1996 never again. Go Jets Go!

Oh yea, definitely Helle is on the no-trade list (wow, forgot to mention him), with Morrissey close behind.

The reason I am not in favor of trading a 1st rd pick is that I want some reason to be interested in the Entry Draft. I really think it is necessary to create interest for our fan base (when we get one once again). Even if it's the 31st choice!

Absolutely hated it the year we didn't have a 1st rd draft choice!

"Connor Hellebuyck hopes Stanley Cup is what comes next"

With the Jets in significant decline, many outside of Winnipeg understand this as a more polite and less urgent trade request.
