yandle, brett connolly for okposo and miller

yes or no?

- homiedclown

That’s close. I’m going to say no. Yandle is only good on the pp. dahlin has the 1 pp spot on the point

the taxi squad doesn't count against the cap, so if you're 21st, 22nd, and 23rd players are on the taxi squad, the cap-hit for that game is only the 20 players dressed, if i red it correctly
- Michael Pachla

Yes, but that’s not the case with us
If we wanted to take advantage of that then we’d have to send some of the taxi squad guys down to Rochester bc you’re only allowed so many guys on the taxi squad

It’s really this simple:
Go on Cap Friendly & demote ANY player to Rochester
However that affects our Cap will affect us the EXACT same way as if he’s put on the taxi squad

What you’re talking about isn’t any kind of trickery
It’s just having an active roster of 20guys instead of 23guys
When u only have an active roster of 20,
only 20 guys count against the Cap

We'd have more than enough to pay for Sheahan if not for our last capologist and the $1.5m overage

To my knowledge.... Taxi squad players must practice separately from the team in case of a Covid outbreak

I’m guessing there’s some kind of rules for how guys can come off the taxi squad & onto the rosters to play in games

IMO the main reason they have the taxi squad is to keep the season going no matter what and allowing the teams to bring 3 goalies on road trips

right...we're just trying to figure out the cap implications and how the taxi squad effects the roster and daily cap calculations...the article states that proper use of the taxi squad, which doesn't count against the cap, could save a team a few million dollars...the sabres should be all over that considering the overage from last year and the potential overage this year

What saves the team $$$ in that case is having:
Roster: 20guys, and TaxiSquad: 5guys
Instead of
Roster: 23guys & TaxiSquad 5guys

It’s having less guys on the active roster that saves on the Cap space

And it means you have less guys practicing with the team itself, and more playing in Rochester (or wherever)

It's still relevant. The overage from last year means the Sabres are probably going to have an overage this year. Once you get in the hole it's hard to dig out.

No overage this year and this topic isn't even discussed because there would be no issue with the cap

There are far better teams in a "worse" cap situation because they treat things like bonus overages the way all smart people do and should: irrelevant.

This is from The Athletic article (and the last I'm posting on this point):

The biggest thing the taxi squad will allow for is smaller NHL rosters.

In a typical season, teams usually carry 22 or 23 players, with the two or three extras serving as “healthy scratches” in games they don’t play. Occasionally teams will dip down to the minimum 20 players – 18 skaters and two goalies – but it’s usually temporary and only in extreme circumstances.

Teams often have last-minute injuries and, especially when on the road, they need those extra players there to fill in. It’s not always possible to call someone up from the minors quickly, given most NHL teams are in different cities than their AHL affiliates.

With a taxi squad of up to six extra players on hand, however, this practice won’t be necessary. If someone is hurt or falls ill at a morning skate, teams will be able to simply pull from the taxi squad – a group that doesn’t count against the cap – rather than having an extra player always on the roster.

When on the road, meanwhile, teams could “send down” players to the taxi squad without them having to board a plane and fly across the country. In most cases, they’d simply be like everyone else on the team – except they suddenly wouldn’t count against the cap.

Why does this matter?

Well, assuming teams take advantage of this in an aggressive fashion and carry fewer roster players for the bulk of the season, we could be talking about millions in savings per team. If the 21st, 22nd and 23rd players on rosters are all on a taxi squad instead of the NHL roster, and they’re on two-way contracts (which carry a lower salary in the minors), the cap savings could in extreme cases add up to more than $3 million per team.

True or false: without the overage, Sheahan is signed for $750k and the Sabres have $800k in cap space

I don’t know how to explain it any clearer to you

If the player is on the Sabres roster,
he counts against the Cap

If he’s on the the Taxi Squad,
his cap hit counts towards us the same way as if that player were on Rochester

Idk what you’re confused about?

True.

Also True. You can use things like LTIR and get the same result. Only difference is other teams' fans with a low financial IQ cry and whine about it.

So I have a low financial IQ because I'm acknowledging that more cap space > less cap space.

That's honestly quite a poopbird comment and unnecessarily antagonistic in addition to being wrong
