Carol Schram: Some good, some not-so-good as Canucks kick off with a split in Edmonton After starting their season with a promising 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, the Vancouver Canucks crashed back to earth when Connor McDavid answered back with a hat track and the Oilers replied with a 5-2 victory on Thursday.

My takeaway was Canucks were 1 and 1 . Seven goals for , eight goals against on their first road trip . Like you said the best of times and the worst of times

Nice work Carol.

If Laine plays like that, the Jets could be a force.

Looking forward to the match up with the Flames.

Repost from last blog:

My .02 on the game was McDavid was pure fire last night. The score was 2-2 less McDavid. Outside of him and Drai it's thin and he can't do what he did last night for 56 games. I must be giving Jake too much credit but I don't feel like he was that bad last night (or at least nothing glaringly obvious). Even with the giveaways Hoglander looked good still what I love about him is he wants to make a play and doesn't just throw the puck away. I felt like Juolevi was fine and will improve throughout the year. I think Schmidt is just getting his feet wet and once he's comfortable he will be pretty important. Bo is a tough assignment and coaches are going to do what they can to get their superstars away from him, which means Petey is going to be going heads up with a lot of top lines which is what he wants. He will show he is up to the challenge. I agree with Vantel I am going to enjoy the youth in this years line up. I think that Bailey will slot in tomorrow, size and speed will give Calgary fits.

Flames started off quick but fizzled as the game went on, Leivo with Monahan and Gaudreau is odd. I have always looked at him as a guy who can move up the lineup in a pinch but to start him there he struggled a bit. I think we will be much better tomorrow.

Thanks Carol!

Split the road trip games with Edmonton is okay. Feel the boys will get better as the year goes on.

Really hating the three point games right now, that's going to screw a team over come playoff time.

Thanks Carol, disgusting performance by Vancouver. That is the most dominant performance macdavid has had against us. How did we respond? Like massive p$ssies. I had no idea it’s illegal to touch Mcdavid. Let’s get some grit on this pathetic roster

His agent posted a full paged add begging the NHL to protect his prized client. I guess the Canucks read it, too.

This division is going to be a war. If they don’t have the stomach for it then They should pack their bags and run home to quarantine with their girlfriends. After the 3rd goal Macjessu should have been ran or at least say something mean. They would have run Elias if the tables were turned

Knee jerk over reaction to a single game early in the season. Missing Miller was very obvious but might not have changed the outcome. As a team the D was poor. The late 1st period goal by McD was the turning point aka table setter for the evening. It shouldn’t have happened on a few levels. Demko not freezing the puck 1stly then letting McD go free 2nd.

No JTM no tough pull the boot straps response. When the Oil made mistakes in game 1 the stars shined. In game 2 the Canuck stars were MIA not executing.

Green didn't adjust or prepare for McD. After seeing him get tons of chances in game 1 he should have stapled someone on him in game 2.

People have got to stop saying No JTM. It is up to the team to have a roster that if one person goes down another can step in.

You keep bringing the freezing the puck up as an issue a lot. But 9.9 times with 2.5 seconds left its not. Everything that could go wrong did in that scenario. From the quick whistle, where Demko did play it after Poolparty rush, to Bo faceoff loss with no tie up. Then after, both Schmidt and Beags were slow to get into lane. This allowing for shot through and McD clear path for rebound; that Demko didn't steer to corner.

It was a textbook Murphy's Law play that set the tone and sealed the fate of that game. It won't happen again. Lighting doesn't strike twice.

Sorry you don't get the role (my post went to his leadership/energizing as well) he has isn't filled by any roster in the league. Canucks like most competitive teams can fill the bottom 8F and bottom 3D. Cap and NHL reality can't do more then play by committee for missing top players.

Yet I see people in these comments talking about how the Oil are thin if they lose McD and Drai. Like what team wouldn't be thin after losing their two best players?? Nucks are missing just one player and looked thin last night. Pete and Brock were near invisible.
