simply to be able to put Perry in the lineup, which they can't right now.

I was thinking the same thing. They are probably making just making some space to be able to add a player like Perry in their active roster since they only have 21 players right now. Or maybe make some cap space for a trade later. Habs don't need to do anything right, except maybe switch Byron and Armia.

Ek needs some fake sources in Montrea........l. As it stands, the Habs only have enough cap room for 21 players on the active roster and that is why Perry started with the taxi squad.
By demoting Evans and Romanov and whoever they can to the taxi squad, and then recalling them before the next game, will help create cap room to get Perry on the active roster.....which a previous post stated also.
Many teams are creating cap space this way. Some teams haven't maxed out their active roster and are using this technique so they can add more players to the active roster.
And I'm sure some teams are trying to set themselves up for the trade deadline.

It's mind boggling to me how little people understand the Cap. The Avs trade Cole yesterday and my fellow Avs fans are confused as hell because they traded a good D for a pretty crappy one and wondering whether another trade is in the works for this newly found cap space. The reality was that the Avs had two players (Burakovsky and Francouz) who were slightly dinged and truly day to day. So they didn't want to put them on IR and lose them for a minimum of 7 days but there wasn't enough cap space to put even 2 ELC guys on the roster. Let alone cap space (and depth chart space) for Bo Byram when he's ready. So they took their 7th D on an expiring contract and created some Cap space without giving up any draft picks. Lo and behold at game time last night the 2.1 million in cap space they had was down to 440k.

I can almost guarantee Montreal created that cap space to give them roster flexibility. This rivals the Hoffman PTO as "angling for better offers" for misunderstanding a move.

Actually Kotkaniemi is on his ELC, which means he is on a two way contract, not a one way like you state in the 2nd paragraph.

The Canadiens started the year with $722,865 in cap space, according to capfriendly. They are also carrying a 21 player roster, with Victor Mete serving as the only healthy scratch in the team’s opening two games. They almost had enough space to keep a 22nd player like Corey Perry on the active roster, but his $750,000 cap hit was just a bit too much to fit.

They are trying to save just under 38K to add Perry to their active roster as you and others have mentioned. They rotate between the kids on entry level contracts to be fair, Suzuki is next.

Great Intel Ek. I wonder if they are doing something a little bigger and adding Hoffman who was just using his PTO as a negotiating tactic?

Also, any update on the Pittsburgh-Winnipeg trade that was brewing last night? Did you call Mario?

What a stupid ass post. Habs have done this with Romanov, Evans, KK and Suzuki will be next. Every day they send a kid down they save $7,700 give or take. They are doing this because they have a 21 man roster with only $700k in cap space. Any other player and they would risk losing to waivers.

The plan as has been reporting since before the season started is so that they can eventually recall Perry/Frolik and be able to use them without fear of waivers again.

Right now they have no choice but to play the same 12 forwards every game. Only change they can make is Mete but that does not look likely for quite some time.

Well this is possible. But if Ek has a source suggesting a trade is imminent then that is definitely a strong possibility as well. Let's just wait for the source to text back with more details.

Not "possible", it is fact. I am not interpreting this, the team straight up came out and said in pre-season that they are going to take advantage of 2 way contracts sending players on 2 year deals up and down to save $7-8k per day.

Evans was the first on day 2, Romanov was 2nd on day 4 and now Kotkaniemi.

If a trade happens, there is absolutely no correlation to what is happening with the kids being sent down.

OK. Well I read Ek's post again. He actually has TWO sources suggesting they are likely creating cap space for a trade. So I'm going to trust TWO sources over your ONE opinion. But agree to disagree. Let's just all wait for Ek to follow up on this as he was busy making more calls. They were after Hoffman for months so it's possible they are looking to acquire him, or perhaps another power forward. Laine, Gaudreau, Nylander, Barzal, JVR + Ghost were all strongly expected to be traded so maybe one of them are involved here.

Plenty of NHL Teams are doing exactly this. It is about creating Cap Space and flexibility. Just watch what teams do before/after each game. Many teams are funneling guys on and off the Taxi Squad to save cap space. It isn't because a trade is immienent...it is to provide cap space so if a trade or need comes along later they have space.

several things wrong here...

If KK was on a one way contract he would have to clear waivers before being sent to the taxi squad. He would obviously get claimed.

He is still waiver exempt and since the taxi squad isn't part of the NHL roster he will not receive his full salary while on the taxi squad. He has a minors salary of $70k.
