Every single team in the league goes through stretches like this. Even the best ones. It happens.
My concerns, no matter how it’s classified in here (slow team or just playing slow), has been the glaring lack of tempo. They have simply been unable to keep up with their opponent outside of the 3rd period of game one.
Secondly, their defense is a tire fire. When Niskanen retired we knew it was trouble, but Fletcher had ample time to try and at least competently replace him. Braun and Gustafsson was a poor job in doing that.
Third, a lot of the issues are the same, with different coaches. Many many different coaches. Slow starts in games and slow starts in seasons. I’m not sure what the answer is now.
Lastly, at some point they need to be brave and go for it. They need to bring in bonafide star power if and when it becomes available. They have drafted a lot of really good young players, and I think Provy, TK, and Hart could be stars. But they need to be aggressive. This 2-3 years away thing every 2-3 years has left them in a perpetual state of mediocrity. Go out, trade some (frank)ing picks and prospects and get some (frank)ing players that can take this team over the (frank)ing top. |

Carter shouldn’t have to apologize for showing emotion. At least someone did. Classy he put the blame on himself, when he knows damn well the team in front of him put no effort into this game and quit in the 3rd period. |

Good assessment. Fletch will need to supplement the roster soon you’ve got a 1c a 1d and a stud goalie. Forward depth is decent. Trade picks and prospects to see if we can make a push for contention. I wonder what management feels is the window here.

Hart is a building block. I see this as him emerging as a leader on the team. Their best player and becoming a leader. Emotion is great from him imo as long as he can bring the game to Match. |

What I saw was a lackadaisical effort from a team who got pushed around all night.
You can sugar-coat it any way you want, but the Flyers got bullied.
There was no fight in the team last night, and that's not a good sign.
I kept waiting for someone to respond, but all I saw was Voracek take a really, really stupid penalty which served no purpose.
Poor.

Actually I thought Voracek and Hart were the only Flyers that did fight last night. To me the pushback should start with the captain and unfortunately he is not that type of player. I have said for a while the team takes on the personality of the player wearing the 'C', and G is too nice from what I see; more enamored with his son than he is about hockey at this stage in his life. I had pushed for Coots to take the 'C' in the past, but I can understand the concern of loosing G all together, but at this point something has to change. The bad starts in games and seasons is just monotonous. I mean think about it, out of your core group of players, who among them is even feisty? G, JVR, Hayes, Provorov, all passive players. I really do believe the makeup of this team needs to change for them to take another step.
Also consider going into this season a lot of you were putting your hopes on a bone cancer survivor and a player who missed the entire season last year because of headaches, and who in his two seasons prior showed little offensive capability. And what can I say about the dumpster fire at D? Loosing 1 defenseman to injury should not cause such a rapid decline in performance for a team with "so much depth". There are a lot of issues on this team and even if they do turn it around in the regular season, do you honestly think this team is going anywhere in the playoffs? Its one thing when you know your team is a serious contender and they are having a stretch of bad games, but its another thing when you know the bad stretch you are seeing is more indicative of what this team really is! |

Stripping a respected veteran All-Star of their C rarely produces anything other a huge (frank)ing circus.
Letters are symbolic. Any player can speak up, call-out other players and/or lead with a monster shift.
I've never heard a single teammate past or present who implied that G wasn't a good captain. |

I agree with a lot of what you say here but I also see a contradiction. Are they in a funk that every team, even the good ones go through or are they in a state of mediocrity?

I think if there wasn't an expansion you'd have already seen fletcher be more aggressive and go for it. I think they felt they weren't far off and could run it back. And then year after put all chips in post expansion. Lets say we wanted a legit top 4 d man. The cost is likely a first a top prospect and a good player. Now we have one more player that needs to be protected so we must now sent a 1st and a 3rd to Seattle to protect them. So now we are down out next 2 first rounders. But we get our d man. Was it worth it ? |

I agree about the stripping the C part. However, Giroux can say all the right things in the locker room, on the bench, at practice and to the media. Real true leadership happens on the ice in games. The Flyers best players for many games have not been good enough. Giroux except for the first Boston game, has not been good enough. He has not been a consistent offensive threat. He did not lead by example. |
