He was a slow starter by "Generational Talent" expectations, but he still put up solid numbers. - Rinosaur
Right, he was supposed to be that 90-100 point guy right off the bat but it took him a few years. |

MacKinnons first 4 seasons were good seasons just not that 9-10mil type money, that's why he has one of the best contracts in the league. He was playing at a 6mil player then boomed to Top 5 player in the game. |

Yeah, he may not have hit Sid or Ovie numbers in his first year, but he also put up very nice numbers for his rookie year. - Rinosaur
It wasn't his rookie season that had people down on him. He regressed from that level for several years after. Then a switch flipped and he decided he wanted to be awesome. |

Wasn’t that during the Roy Era where Roy was was coaching the team into the ground, though? |

Yes 3 out of the 4 good seasons were Roy. Then under Bednar he had 1 good season and 3 elite seasons, and I'm sure he'll be the same this year. |

I wasn't trying to say MacKinnon sucked. Was just saying that he started slow by his standards now. That may or may not happen with Lafreniere. |

I was pretty happy to see that arrogant wiener fall flat on his face.
Remember pulling the goalie with 4+ minutes to go? I think I have that right. Maybe just 3+ minutes but still way more than the standard sub 2 minutes when down by 1 goal.
Somewhere I've still got a newspaper cutting of the image of little Mike Vernon landing a punch to Roy's head and Roy's hair flying out in all directions. Good stuff. Roy was so cocky he thought he was going to destroy Vernon haha. |

I became quite the Wings fan during those years (my best friend is a Wings fan from the UP). I really came to despise those Avalanche teams with Roy and Turtle leading the pack. Now THAT was some exciting, entertaining hockey! |

There was actually a statistical study that concluded that for optimal probability of tying, you should pull the goalie with like 12 minutes left or something crazy like that. A bunch of NHL players were polled about it and I think it was Giroux said something like of the coach did that he’d feel like he had given up on the team. Think pretty much everyone had a similar response except for one guy that thought it was bad ass.
Probability wise it’s a good move but there’s just zero way of getting your team to buy into it. Kind of how it’s always the right call to go for it on 4th down if you’re within 2 yards regardless of where you are on the field in football. You’ll lose the defensive half of the locker room quickly doing that. |

Avs/Wings was must watch hockey for sure. Forsberg and Federov were my favorite players love their games. Forsberg just had so many injuries. |

Lol, knew that was coming. Those were the (frank)ing best games though. Not even a fan of either team and I, like most hockey fans wanted to watch Avs/Wings. The Star power, the hate. Amazing games! |

I hated Forsberg, too haha. I think the only player I liked from those teams was Sakic - he and Yzerman seemed like brothers from a different mother. I guess Borque, too, but he was a late arrival. |

Yeah, that seems bunk. I don't think there is that much of an advantage 6v5. For one, there are so many players in a relatively small area (offensive zone) that it's hard to create space, not to mention hard to get the puck past so many bodies. The defending team still has 5 defenders in the zone, so that's pretty good.
5v4 seems way more advantageous and what's the average, 1 out of 5 times is successful? Then there's the fact that if the other team does get the puck, a shorty is pretty rare whereas with a pulled goalie it's almost rare not to get scored on. |

So i found it. It’s an Athletic article from ‘18. The optimal times are 6 minutes left if down 1, 12 if down 2, half way through the second period if down 4, and immediately if down 5 or more. And I mixed up the player reactions. Anders Lee was the one that was hard against it, Auston Matthews was so so, and Giroux was all for it. If you have a sub:
