No doubt on pure talent, McDavid has no peers. There's probably only half a dozen guys in the league who can even think the game like him*, and no one can do it at his speed.
On the defensive end, Mathews reels in some of the lead though. Unless one pulls away you can argue it either way, but I'd give the edge to McDavid**
*Happily, one of them is Marner.
**Mathews future teammate. |

McDavid doesn’t have to play defense. When he is out there the puck is automatically on his stick and he is flying at a speed no player can reach.
All joking aside Matthews is a great player. McDavid is however far superior |

In any debate involving mcdavid- the answer is always him:
Both the Best player in the world by a country mile and carries that franchise on his back
Leaf fans will say Matthews, everyone else knows it’s Connor - HB77

Matthews appears to have developed a better understanding of the defensive game than McDavid, and now that Ovechkin is in decline, there may be no better shot.
However, McDavid is the better player, and is a better player without much of a supporting cast. No players can match his tool set. I sense McDavid will likely be the MVP with Matthews as runner-up. The only things that I can see impacting this is a significant injury to either player, or votes being split between these players and their co-pilots, Draisaitl and Marner. This might allow a third party to rise from below. |

McDavid and Draisaitl are both better than Matthews. |

Mathews isn’t even the leading scorer on his team, name a Hart Trophy winner who’s second on their team in scoring.
McDavid is clearly a better player and more important to his team. |

Wow mcdavid is the best player but closer then people think. 2 different type ofplayers. The question I’d who is mvp not best player. Saying Draisaitl is better then Matthews is just stupid. |

Who is MVP makes it even a bigger gap for McDavid. The oilers without him are lottery bound. The leafs without Matthews are still pretty good. |

I think it's worth noting that both players are based in Canada which is frozen for like 6 months a year. Like this storm in Texas is what Canada routinely faces for 6 months. Or so we've been told... |

Matthews is an all star and a great player. McDavid is a generational talent. Crosby, Lemieux, Ovie, Gretzky. Etc. if you disagree I don’t know how |

Kopitar...21 pts in 16 games, plays almost 22 mins a night, plays in all situations.still one of the best defensive forwards in the game.also plays with very little supporting cast, your choices have at least 1 other superstar to work with, this guy has been carrying the kings for yrs.
Not belittling what the other 2 have done in anyway, both superstars and having amazing yrs, these guys are going to be talked about for along time, but kopitar is in the convo. - Dewey8
Top 3 in Divisional MVP race for sure.

The question is who is the MVP. When looking at the MVP, I always consider what the team would be without that player. A few years ago, Hall won in NJ because they had nothing else and he put up 90+ points, it’s the same with McDavid this year. He is the MVP at this point(assuming they make the playoffs) because without him, the Oilers are an absolute train wreck.
If you are debating who is the best player? That is an entirely different question. McDavid is faster and a better playmaker/offensive player. He makes those around him significantly better. Matthews is a better goal scorer, the best in the league right now and over the next few years, I think will show he is one of the best goal scorers of all time. (I know it’s early but give him a few years). Matthews is also the better defensive player. He’s not going to win the Selke any time soon but he is a much better player defensively than McDavid.
I would say at this point McDavid is the better player but it is definitely closer is than most people will admit |

Neither player should since they both play in the amateur division this year. |

Matthews is very very (could easily add 10 more very's here) easily the best player on the Leafs, regardless of Marner putting up good point totals.
And I don't think anyone is arguing that McJesus is better than literally everyone. |
