I typically advocate for McDavid here. He’s unreal, and undoubtedly the league’s most outstanding player. But you can’t vote for a guy on a middling Oilers team. Not when there’s someone averaging a goal per game and playing Selke-level defence on a team that’s leading the NHL in points by a mile.

There’s a reason McDavid doesn’t win the Hart every year, despite being the most talented. His team is a joke. If the vote happened today, Matthews would win. And you’d all be very angry, lol

Anyone who is arguing that McDavid is the better player is nothing more than a Leaf hater. Every Leaf fan knows McDavid is the best player on the planet.
The MVP race is so close right now, you can flip a coin. Anyone saying otherwise is again, simply a Leaf hater.

If Matthews was wearing a different jersey, the conversation on this thread would be very different.

Matthews is an all star and a great player. McDavid is a generational talent. Crosby, Lemieux, Ovie, Gretzky. Etc. if you disagree I don’t know how

Matthews is a generational player too.

Awesome stats but it’s a fake season. These guys are dominating a very bad Canada division. I can’t take these stats as anything other then easy competition. Lots of season to go still. Not sure how the league can give awards based on a sample size against 1/4 of the teams.

We should switch the debate to the best forward. Josh Anderson is having a good year but it's hard to argue against Mike Hoffman.

Matthews is actually an exciting player that all the fans should be able to enjoy watching, however the Toronto press pump his tires so badly that it really makes fans from around the league dislike him as a player. Seeing Craig Button compare him to Mario Lemieux last night is insulting to Mario! We are talking about a guy that had over 500 points in his first four years in the NHL and Matthews has just cracked 300 in the start of his fifth season. Yes, Matthews has had a nice 10 game stretch, but for a player that has not cracked 80 points in a season yet, I think we had better hold off MVP discussions until the end of the year.

McDavid and not close. Edmonton is worse than the Canucks without McDavid.

Leafs would still be solid without Matthews. Better defence, goalchie, supporting cast, etc etc.

Generational is thrown out way too often.
We are only guessing where these guys will end up at the end of their careers at this point. My bet is at the end of it they are both first ballot hall of famers with McDavid in the conversation as a top 5 all time. Matthews a tier lower more on the level of a Brett Hull type. JMHO.

Not surprisingly, the thread is full of idiotic takes.

McDavid is the answer. Not only is he the better player, (Matthews being the better goal-scorer), but without McDavid, the Oilers are bottom feeders. Without Matthews, the Leafs would still be competitive most nights.

The gap between the two is closing though. It will be interesting to see who is the more complete player in the next couple years.

- Aetherial

The leaf would still be in first in the division, the Oilers would be worse than the Canucks. If both players were on the sidelines.

I prefer his 700+ pts in first 5yrs. LOL
If it weren't for health issues (cancer and back), Mario may very well be the all-time point leader.

Don't lessen players values because of commentators/writers opinions. Matthews is a stud but no, he is not Mario or Gretzky. McDavid is closer to those 2 guys.

I wouldn't question McDavid's current pace of 152 points over an 82 game season at all.

1. Craig Button is an idiot.
2. He isn’t Mario - mario is in the discussion for GOAT
3. toronto press do say too much, but often it is to drag guys down not pump tires. Any hot take to get them attention.
4. Matthews has got much, much better defensively. He is decent now and putting in effort. The selke talk is a bit of a hot take, but he has
A 200 ft game now.
5. The two eras are not comparable for points or goals. So many differences in coaching and especially goalies and their equipment. There are statistical methods for comparing. Matthews is in the very elite top end goal scorers now and would have been then. Would have scored even more goals in Mario’s time and been in the top few reach year so his numbers after 300 games would be much better. The statistics wouldn’t then make the comparison quite as ridiculous.
6. Matthews is a beast. He plays now. Enjoy him for what he is.

Wow.

A lot of these comments are absolutely clueless.

McDavid is the better player, but not by as much as people think. McDavid is also the MVP, but again, not by as much as people think. You can very clearly tell that a lot of these posters do not watch Matthews play. Matthews is carrying the Leafs right now. What Matthews is doing is complete insanity...and he's doing it with a complete 200 ft game.

That being said, like I already stated, McDavid is better and McDavid is the MVP. The Oilers would be complete dirt without the guy.

Matthews is the 2nd best player in the world and he just happens to be chasing the best player in the world.

This is a solid take and a good argument, the only issue is I don't expect the Leafs to continue playing this well the entire season. If the Leafs crush the entire league after 56 games, then I agree, and you give Matthews the Hart.

But, I think the Leafs will come back down to Earth a little bit and McDavid will keep a horrible Oilers team in the playoffs...and McDavid will win the MVP.

Captain Underpants really isn't even in the conversation.

McDavid, MacKinnon, Draisaitl,

How many goals and points would Draisaitl have if he got to play with Marner instead of the diminutive Yamamoto, and a no-name in Kahun.

That North division is a joke. These 2 beating up on inferior competition. Individual awards should not even be handed out this year.

Great Answer. I don't think Patty Kane should be forgotten though, if he keeps this up and the Hawks squeeze into the playoffs I think its hard not to give it to him.
