Sean Maloughney: Some Thoughts After Trouncing The Flames

There was nothing wrong with the shot clock. The first period was dominated by the flames with the exception of a couple power play goals by the oil. The flames fell apart after that. You’re getting way ahead of yourself thinking the oilers are good. They stink less than the rest of the North but they are not anywhere near competing in a wide open league. Enjoy it for this season.

Maybe it is time for the Flames to do a full rebuild, they've basically never tanked a season in the history of the franchise. They've had bad some teams but they always do their honest best to ice a competitive team and have that never quit attitude. It's something to admire, but in today's game having those high end franchise players make it so much easier to build a team. They still have a decent group of players but for some reason they just can't put it together this season.

The Oilers aren't special beyond having the top 2 players on earth, McDavid and Draisaitl can't do It all, The goaltending Is a world away from being a serious contender, The blueline Is just par to subpar, And the offense has just four players who you can depend on.

Well this is a stupid comment. They're 9-2 in their last 11 because they have had depth scoring. Khaira, Puljujarvi, Ennis, Archibald have all been a factor.

It's just a really stupid comment.

Why the (frank) are you always so pessimistic? They finally have a top 6 with good players and a third line that has been effective over the past 11 games.

Bouchard has shown promise, Nurse has emerged as a goal scoring threat, Barrie is playing well, Laggeson put in good performances as well. This without having Klefbom and missing Bear for a large chunk of the season.

Come free agency, this team will have a lot more cap as well.

Quit female doging and enjoy for (frank) sakes.

Well since you are basically the "Alfieisking" of stupid comments on the Oilers thread, maybe it was stupid as you are by far the expert on stupidly commenting.

You’re a real crotchety son of a female dog, aren’t you? I feel bad that your existence is so awful that you can’t simply enjoy anything for what it is. That’s got to be rough.

I enjoy life plenty. I’ve been correct about the oilers for a long time and you guys are still in here pumping them up. They stink. Period.

Maybe don’t just assume things.I’m not pumping anything up. I know they aren’t good enough for the rest of the league. Doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the ride. You be you I guess.

They finished second in the division last season as well when they played against the entire league. Feel free to continue posting on here as you are always a ray of sunshine.

You used to post realistically about the oilers and their crap management as well...then you became the blogger and started pandering to the homers.

It's cute that you think Tkachuk is going to stick around for a rebuild. His contract is setup so he can basically force a trade after this season.

If they're doing a rebuild, he's gone.

Keeping Tkachuk, Lindholm, and Hanifin around would be stupid as it'll keep them competitive enough to not be able to draft a superstar.

Its interesting to read some fans attempting to argue the team has great depth, when in reality they are a two man show. Fortunately one of these two is the most talented player in the league. Some have even attempted to convince others that the Oilers defense is above average, referencing Klefbom, Barrie and Bear being good players. They are acceptable, perhaps suitable to 4D, 5D and 6D. None can be mistaken anymore for very good defensemen.

Moreover, the only teams with weaker third and fourth lines might be Ottawa, Detroit, Buffalo and Vancouver. Each of Ennis, Kahun, Archibald, Neal and Chaisson are at best 4th line talent on a good team. Khaira and Haas would not dress for most squads. Attempting to convince anyone the team is deep at forward is a fools errand. The offensive talent thins out quickly after the dynamic duo.

Despite this lack of depth. Oilers fans should still rejoice this season. The Oil benefit greatly from placement in the fragile North division. This season they face only one playoff worthy squad on a regular basis. The other five teams are deeply flawed; the Canucks and Senators are rudderless, the Flames are absent maturity and lack effective leadership, the Jets possess the league's worst defence, and the Habs lack elite players while being burdened with one of the worst and most expensive starting goalies. Despite the utter lack of depth and barring injury, McDavid and Draisaitl should easily be able to carry the Oilers into the second round of the playoffs and possibly beyond. It should be a good season for the Oilers despite the obvious lack of depth.

Funny thing happened in the last couple years. The Oilers started making good decisions. Clearly there are still issues I like to speak about regularly but it isn't all awful anymore.

Iggy is a grumpy (frank) who could use a little sunshine in his life.

He has been conditioned by 15 years on ineptitude by the Oilers to expect the worst.

I think that we have a solid top six, the bottom six needs work but those type of players are easier to come by than top six forwards. The blue line is a work in progress and way better than i anticipated. Goaltending is more (frank)ed than Rutt's POF profile.
