I’m pretty sure they’ll be able to show his company engaged in criminal tax and insurance fraud. They’d have to prove he was personally aware and directed it to nail his ass in jail which is tougher but it will cost him at a time when he owes $400M or $400 min for Max which is almost half a bin.

But yeah it was ego and also an opportunity to build his brand which was his major asset financially. Remember it was the Apprentice that saved him.
