Skinner scratched third game in a row.

I highly doubt anyone is taking that on, too long to retain on and too costly to dump.

That's the thing, 25-30 million sounds like a lot until you start adding up the players to be re-signed. Say Pettersson and Hughes get 6 million each, not out of the question, Edler gets re-signed because they can't replace him, there's another 4-5 million. Then you add in
at say 2.5 and Juolevi at 1.5, that's around 21 million. They've have room but not an abundance of it.

- Pacificgem

Juolevi 1.0
Podkolzin 900K
Rathbone 900K
Gaudette 1.0
Lind 1.0
Benn 1.3

Now you are up to 18 players and 24 mil still left.

Okay, so who plays on the first line if you trade him? Are you getting back another 1st liner with a cap hit under 6 mil?

I don't disagree the team needs a shakeup, but Miller is the wrong piece to sell imo.

- NorthNuck

You want to remain as competitive as you can, I get that, however, you take youth back and you rebuild a deeper lineup. I'm not advocating getting a player of his current value, I'm saying take advantage of his current value, which is high, and get a good young forward and a good young defenceman to make a deeper team.

Yup, like I said, they'll have room but not to where they can go out and sign a big name UFA for 7 million dollars is all I'm saying.

Isn't that exactly what we don't want to do? Signing big UFA contracts has bit us in the ass.

I would be looking for a guy like Lowry at 3.5 for two to three years. Getzlaf for one year or small deals like that. I would walk away from Edler at 4 mil.

Isn't there cap overages that need to be paid for some of these players who are on an ELC.
Having an extra 2-3 million unused space would help with that...and no, LTIR space can not be used to cover those expenses.

With Jim Benning as our GM, yes...100%!! Going to have to replace Sutter and Pearson though, not sure that's coming from within, you're gonna have to go outside the organization to replace that. That's a two-way street, like I said, the player has to want to come here to this tire-fire.

There is potential for those bonuses . I am not sure but I think the bonuses were agreed up based on an 82 game schedule and I have heard nothing about the numbers being adjusted to a 56 game schedule.

Pearson is easily replaced by Podk in my eyes. Sutter Isn't exactly hard, nor easy, to replace but there will be options out there that won't cost a lot.

I believe it was around 16 mil . Not positive but that sounds about right.

That is without Ferlands 3.5 mil

Personally I'm not handing the kid a top six role, he may or may not be there but you can't just say he's a shoe-in for that spot. What if he's not? He can replace Sutter in a bottom six role though until he gets his feet wet.

He may very well surprise like Hoglander did though, who knows, Hoglander is struggling offensively now even though his work ethic is still there.

I believe all the bonuses on ELC became pro-rated on a 56 game schedule.

Sorry, I meant overall cap for the team. how close to the 81.5m were we at the time? Also trading Sutter/Pearson will give us non LTIR space to cover bonuses I think, JV as well I can see traded.

I'm honestly not worried. Gaudette can fill a spot on Bo's wing if Podk is better suited to start on the 3rd line. Kid is snake bitten atm, but with the chances he is getting at his current ice time, he could have more production with more ice-time.

Ah okay I see that you're approaching it from a different angle. Personally, I would prefer to avoid wasting years of Petey/Hughes careers if at all possible.

Could just be the impatience in me as a fan but I don't want to see the team load up on youth so they can be good in 3 years, I want them to compete now.

I'm ok with it because it makes the Canucks a bottom five team again to where they can draft and gain more depth. Although I'm not sure Jim Benning is the guy to acquire a lot of picks, has not been his MO since he arrived.

If you're going to fix this thing, because it's broken, you're going to have to make some moves of significance. Not sure they have the balls to do that, but it needs to be done.

To be clear though, Jim Benning is not the guy to pull off these moves.

Pettersson just turned 22, Hughes just turned 21, Boeser is 23, Hoglander is 20, Podkolzin is 19, Horvat is 25.....you're not wasting anything, you're building for a competitive future.

Michael Jordan won a Championship in his 7th season, Joe Sakic won a Championship in his 8th season, Mario Lemieux won a Championship in his 7th season.

The team has good young players, build a more complete team around them IMO.

Colton Scissons is a guy i'd look at replacing Sutter with, Good cap hit, young and can generally produce at a 3c rate, good defensively.
