I'm ok with it because it makes the Canucks a bottom five team again to where they can draft and gain more depth. Although I'm not sure Jim Benning is the guy to acquire a lot of picks, has not been his MO since he arrived.

Listening to Green and Miller yesterday , it sounds like JTM is going nowhere.

Pettersson just turned 22, Hughes just turned 21, Boeser is 23, Hoglander is 20, Podkolzin is 19, Horvat is 25.....you're not wasting anything, you're building for a competitive future.

Michael Jordan won a Championship in his 7th season, Joe Sakic won a Championship in his 8th season, Mario Lemieux won a Championship in his 7th season.

The team has good young players, build a more complete team around them IMO.

- Pacificgem

The only star players that win during their ELC are the ones who join a team with other star players already established and they just give them that extra push. In the last 15 years, Kane and Toews are the only ones to do it.

So Benning has built a good core and we need patience because they are still growing?

This will not sit well with the fire Benning group.

Moving a guy who had massive success, is on a great contract, and was directly responsible for the team moving up in the standings last year simply because he's looked disengaged for a few weeks while still putting up almost a point per game would be ridiculous
- NorthNuck

Marky had a bigger impact and we moved on from him. Everyone seems fine with it. I would be fine moving Miller if the return was right.

Six teams in those seven years have won a cup so 25 other GMs have failed. Maybe it is not an easy thing to do?

Personally I'm not handing the kid a top six role, he may or may not be there but you can't just say he's a shoe-in for that spot. What if he's not? He can replace Sutter in a bottom six role though until he gets his feet wet.

He may very well surprise like Hoglander did though, who knows, Hoglander is struggling offensively now even though his work ethic is still there.

Well put. Now duck and cover.

Ah okay I see that you're approaching it from a different angle. Personally, I would prefer to avoid wasting years of Petey/Hughes careers if at all possible.

Could just be the impatience in me as a fan but I don't want to see the team load up on youth so they can be good in 3 years, I want them to compete now.

- NorthNuck

I don't think he is approaching it any differently than what most are trying to say.
This team doesn't have the quality nor the depth to be contending, so use a older valuable asset to try help fix some of that with younger players that will be filling in several holes when the team is ready to contend.
I think many fans got mislead during last seasons play-in thingy and think this team is oh so close.

that's not a bad thing imo.

with the hits he's taken, his style of play is on the cusp of decline. this is the peak of his value and seahawks could get a lot of great picks with him.

And fans of some of those teams have still called for their GM's head because they went all in to win.

That's why I was pissed with trading a 1st for Miller. Keep building, you don't win the cup the 2nd year your young stars start to emerge.

benning is good at drafting. poor at everything else.

he's built a good core through good drafting and inept management (that's led to good drafting position.)

it's time to get someone who's better at professional scouting, cap management and can utilize the drafting/scouting structure that jb has put in place.

You have said it yourself many times. The issue is not the bottom 6 or the D this year.

You named Pettersson Pouty and I will go on a limb and guess it is not because you are happy with his play.

Most of the screw up on D have been Hughes related as of late. Most giveaways are JTM. The fly by stick out the stick JTM.

Canucks in the last seven games have controlled the play they haven't finished it out though. I do believe they have amateur coaching but the rest can be easily fixed.

it's "groundhog year."

every year is a brand new start. so it's not 7 years and counting, it's 1 year since covid.

next year will be 1 year since flat cap.

there's always excuses to be played every year.

I never said they should move him because he looks disengaged, did I? I said the mix is wrong, the team isn't built to win, there's too many issues. So. You need to move players of value, which Miller has loads of, to retool the lineup and build a deeper more competitive team.
- Pacificgem

JTM is the kind of player that normally would get you a massive haul at the TDL. Unfortunately this year is a strange one with covid, flat cap, and expansion coming up.

so another year where the canucks are neither buyers nor sellers, just "holders." in other words... business as usual.

and just for you,

Any time you can upgrade you do it but don't change for the sake of changing.

I still think Canucks have a great young core.

This year they will be one of the top 10 teams with cap space and the same the following year.

The last few trades have been Schmidt for a third. Toffoli for a second and that center prospect. Pearson for Gubbrandson. Motte for Vanek. JTM for a first and third.

Their UFA signings this year were all two years or less.

None of this screams to me fire the GM.
