Detroit only had one 3-goal win all of last season. They have two already this year!

Yeah, this team is still bad, and progress is slow. But it is progress, and I do think we're headed in the right direction.

Good win tonight. Larry Murphy is getting ready to hit up every Arby's in Metro Detroit tomorrow.

Remember when Murph kept scarfing down those dollar hot dogs at the Joe? I was worried he'd turn into Sherman Klump.

So we are gonna see Gagner on the top line with Larkin and Mantha soon, huh?

Honestly, could be worse.

IMO Gagner is actually not bad at driving play / creating scoring chances. His Achilles heel as far as offense is concerned is that he's a fairly poor finisher. Putting him on the line with people who can actually shoot (admittedly, there's not many on this club) might work better than we think.

I feel like Gagner and Fabbri might have some chemistry together. Only issue is that you'd want someone very, very defensively responsible rounding out that line.

EDIT:

Yeah the more I think about this the more I feel like Gagner is just an odd fit.

Remember Mark Mowers? Andy Miele? Stacey Roest? Gagner kind of strikes me as that sort of category of player. He’s probably a point-per-game player at the AHL level, and it’s not like he’s terrible at the NHL level, but it’s just hard to find a “fit” for him in a lineup that makes sense.

He’s not really good enough offensively that you can justify bumping a much better all-around player out of the top six.

He’s not very good defensively and doesn’t kill penalties.

Probably his ideal spot would be as an offensive third-liner, but since he also ideally needs guys who can finish AND cover up for his defensive mistakes … well, those players tend to be better than third-line caliber. Possibly Gagner - Namestnikov - Ryan would make a pretty good third line, but in order for that to be assembled Detroit would need to get Bertuzzi back AND find another top six forward (preferably a center) somewhere.

The countdown Is on! Can Gagner get three more goals In the next 3 seasons? Lol. He's a solid 4 liner actually but not a difference maker.

My favorite random Gagner fact by far is that he had an 8-point game once. Only player to do that in the last 30 years!

Sure maybe if we played him 23 minutes per night he probably wouldn't start putting up McDavid numbers, but shouldn't we at least try?

I'd rather play the Underrated Difference Maker Sam Gagner 23 minutes than dinosaurs Flippy Rubble and Franzy Flintstone 15 minutes a night. Yabba Dabba Doo!

The guys wives now check on them, true story. When they went to Montreal last year Osgood sold out Murphy on air. He’s supposed to have a 2 dog limit, had 3. Apparently dogs in Montreal are really good

I’d be fine with him on the Larkin line a few times. Brome still figuring things out

Yeah Redmond always talked about the great hot dogs in Montreal. Especially the ones at the old Forum. Boy Oh Boy.

I do think he makes decent sense as a stopgap. Gagner can at least keep up.

That said, I think Larkin-Gagner would be pretty good at controlling the flow of play but maybe not so good at cashing in on whatever chances they do create. They'd need a finisher badly, I think. Sure would be nice if we had Bertuzzi healthy.

Realistically though, even without Bertuzzi I probably want my top six right now to be Larkin, Mantha, Zadina, Ryan, Namestnikov, Fabbri. I also would be interested to see if Gagner still has it in him to play center, since I'm not sure Fabbri really can at the NHL level and it would be nice to not have to rely on either Namestnikov or Filppula at 2C.

Boy Oh Boy look at that gang. That puck must've been deflected. There's no way Jimmy Howard or any goalie in the NHL could've stopped that puck. That puck must've been deflected at least 4 times before it somehow found it's way to the back of the net. If we didn't have bad luck then we wouldn't have any luck at all. Boy Oh Boy.

Mathias Brome is 27 years old (he's 26 actually). He's not a kid. He's 27 years old. But he's getting so many quality scoring chances and the puck just isn't going in for him . But he's a real mature kid. He's 27 years old so he's not a kid anymore.

Larkin is out, day to day with an upper body injury. Fabbri likely centering the top line, this should be interesting.
