Thomas Townsend: Point Streak Reaches 3 Games
- Thomas Townsend

this team is in a playoff dogfight , the Hawks keep winning and the Stars are creeping up, it's rather amateurish and bush league for Torts to bench key players, '' because he needs to prove a point'', this pointless exercise is being done ad nauseum to no results. If Laine has an inexistant defensive game , might as well just roll with the fact he can score you goals and adapt the gameplan to Laine's strengths...

The deal would see Boone Jenner and Nick Foligno head to the Maple Leafs in return for Alexander Kerfoot, Pierre Engvall, Timothy Liljegren and a draft pick, which could be conditional based on Foligno re-signing in Toronto. The Maple Leafs may also have to include a sweetener as they will require the Blue Jackets to retain some of Foligno's salary remaining for this season.

What do you think of this rumor?

Not much. Three young marginal players for the CBJ captain and a veteran player who does a decent job every night.

I don't know much about the Leafs, but unless one of them is hiding the fact he is a superstar in the making the CBJ isn't getting much in return.

Men,

With all due respect to both Alex and our blogger, as I remember reading over and over again Laine and and Domi were considered liabilities on the defensive end before they came to Columbus.

If that is true and the CBJ were trying to protect a 1 goal lead at the end of an important game, then we know why he held them out. Since this team has not really been much of a possession team over the years when would these offensive players get a chance to go on offense? The problem was the players who used to be good defenders are not any more for some reason, and the game got tied up.

Obviously a case can be made that once the game is in OT not using them was a mistake. But if you are up by 1 goal with six minutes left and you think you can win the game with defense, then Torts was right to do it. Please let me know if I am wrong about my recollection of the situation.

I just cannot believe how far this team has fallen this season, I can't stand to watch them.

I don't think 2 older forwards are what Toronto needs. They are looking for D - so if they want anything from the Jackets it would include Savard, not both Foligno and Jenner. And other than Liljegren, just give me picks - maybe as high as a 2nd + mid-round. Those other players are prospect has-beens

Torts is probably one of the better yet worst coaches in the league, his system and demanding style allows this team to take down giants (see Toronto and Tampa) in the playoffs, but the man is inflexible when it comes to adapting his game plan to specific players who quite frankly cannot play the role he is asking them to play.

Yes I knew what we were getting in Domi (having played for my hometown Canadiens) and Laine and these are probably the best examples of Torts chasing this '' defensive game'' that's inexistant.

If it were up to Torts he'd probably have 12 Boone Jenners at forward.

You nailed it.
Except your last sentence. It would be 4 Folignos and 4 Jenners and 4 Atkinsons. Defense would be 2 Savards, 2 DelZ, 1 Jones, 1 Z. Jones and Z have too much offense.
