To be honest I'm not even mad about how poor they are playing. They kept retooling this group thinking they would flip a switch in the playoffs. That was never going to happen.

Maybe this is the kick in the teeth the guys up top needed to actually rebuild. I know they wont ever do a full rebuild but man, a guy can hope they are just naturally bad in 2023 for the Bedard draft.

Time for a retool. Keep Mango, Chucky, Dube, Andersson, Valmalki, Hanifan and Lindholm. Also keep Tanev and Markstrom.

See if Florida will take Gio for a Ekblad replacement to finish season, keep salary to get the best pick/prospect we can get.

Johnny and Money time to go, Money can be a good second line center on a team with more talent, Johnny can be a Kessel like support star with a top end center.

Backlund, as much as i love him could be a great piece for a contender looking for a excellent 3rd line center. Maybe Penguins?

Time for a retool, if we are keeping sutter we will need some more sutter type players.

The question is not if they are going to make the playoffs, the question is are they going to win another game? I know I'm being melodramatic but it is what it is. The Tre experiment is over, diminutive mini-me's squirting around the ice doesn't work in the corners, in front of the net, or defending the point. The damage has been institutionalized, Stockton ain't much different.

Really getting tired of watching the top guys just not give a (frank). Gaudreau refuses to engage in any kind of stick-checking or get a sniff of physical play, Monahan can't hit the net or control the puck on his stick to save his life... it's just bad.

Mangiapane is one goal away from being tied for the team lead in goals, and as much as I love the kid for that, that's just sad.

Deadline plan :

With 1,3 million retained, someone in need of a middle 6 center would almost certainly offer a low 1rst round pick for Backlund. At 4/year Backlund suddenly becomes one of the most appealing options on the market. Pittsburgh, for exemple, are looking for a real 3C ever since they traded Staal to Carolina.

CGY : Marcus Pettersson, 2022 1rst round pick
PIT : Mikael Backlund (25% retained), Oliver Kylington, 2021 3rd round pick (EDM)

Then you flip Pettersson to Winnipeg along with Rittich, since they could very much use both.

CGY : Ville Heinola, Laurent Brossoit, Nathan Beaulieu, 2022 3rd round pick (CLB)
WIN : Marcus Pettersson, David Rittich (50% retained)

Minnesota are looking like they're gonna make the playoffs. They have a bunch of good playmakers (Kaprizov, Zucarello, Greenway), but they lack goalscorers, and also lack center depth. Monahan should be appealing to them. They'are also looking to get rid of Rask...Flames can help.

CGY : Victor Rask, Calen Addison, 2021 1rst round pick (PIT)
MIN : Sean Monahan (10% retained)

Goes without saying that Flames should also trade any spare parts (Ryan, Bennett, Leivo, etc.) before the deadline.

In the summer, finish the house cleaning and get rid of Gaudreau, Giordano (expansion draft?) and Tkachuk.

Rebuild shouldn't take that long this way, max 2-3 years. Weaponize cap space, take on bad contracts, accumulate assets.

Wow thats just GM career suicide & destined Flames to lose for the next 5 years. Nothing in those deals are going to help improve the team. Ownership arent going to want to go down that path.At most, we're going to move expiring depth pieces that may help & appeal to a contender. Sutter likes Bennett but if the price is right I can see him move. Sutter is loyal to Gio so they arent about to do a salary dump with Gio, likely see him available to Seattle & they protect Tanev instead. Like Bennett, if price is right Flames will trade Gio. Monahan & Gaudreau are offseason trades. Tkachuk isnt going anywhere. This isnt going to be any TNT Kablooey reaction. Perhaps adjust your expectations.

Umm Lackland at 4 million does not get close to a first round pick that’s just crazy talk. Monahan on his own might get a first round pick, not a 1st+ extras as you say.

In a world where Ryan Reaves was once worth a 1st round pick, Backlund at $4M could very well fetch a late 1st round in pick in a mystery draft.

Derek Stepan fetched a 2nd round pick.
Barclay Goodrow fetched a 1rst round pick.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau fetched a first AND second round pick.
Blake Coleman fetched a 1rst round pick.
Andreas Athanasiou fetched two 2nd round picks.
Etc.

A 4 million Backlund with term will absolutely fetch a late 1rst round pick from a contender, thank you very much.

If you're only putting a fork in them now, you're not eating anything but bones and gristle. They were done before they fired Ward and they've only made matters worse with Sutter.

How you ask...we win the 1st overall this year and package it with picks prospects for Eichel. Monahan for Laine. Simple. Now GFY

I wasn't asking how, I just went into Rosters in NHL 21 and made it happen. Still have my 1st round pick to boot.

Leafs guy, but Calgary has always been my team out west.

Flames need to decide who has the keys. They have faith in Brad Treliving, then lets make some trade and fix this. If they don't, fire Brad and co now and let the new person steer the ship.

Johnny Hockey is clearly not a fit.

At least Brads dad could treat everyone to some Boston Pizza.

Ahhhh maybe the Jets could use Petterson, but certainly not at the cost of Heinola, and Beaulieu and a draft pick. And you can keep "used to be big save Dave" and we'll keep LB thank you very much!

I think Markstrom was a two year wonder and now the Flames are stuck with a bad contract and a average goaltender that can’t stop a (frank)ing beach ball. He reminds of Dan Cloutier.

With salary retained (as much as 50%) I could very much see someone offering a 2nd round pick for Derek Ryan. He's pretty much the perfect bottom 6 center. He's good on the dot, right handed, responsible defensively, top PK player and can chip in offensively. For a true contender, perfect 4th line center who can slide up without effort if injuries happen.

I'm pretty sure a team like Washington, Tampa Bay or Carolina would happily dish out a late 2nd round pick for Derek Ryan.

Little reminder : Paul Gaustad went for a 1rst round pick a few years back.
