at least Dan could throw them. - bloatedmosquito
Meh, I had little respect for his style. He was an ambush fighter. Very lucky Probert didn't get ahold of him after suckering Passmore after the fight was broken up. I hope the Ref is still on his Christmas card mailing list for keeping him out of the ICU that night.

very true. I was just trying to make flame fan feel even worse about signing Marky. |

There's only 5 more years after this season. Everything will be fine.

This team absolutely needs to shake up the roster to change the culture but I would say to temper expectations with what our players are going to be worth on the open market.
We had similar hopes when the team moved on from iginla/boumeester and were left disappointed. This time around our players don’t carry the same pedigree those 2 did, have not performed up to their expectations that last two years and have shown no reason to believe that will change, and due to the flat cap teams aren’t as willing to take on players whose value isn’t worth their contracts. To focus on the core 4 most likely to move:
JG (without a contract extension)- you’re probably looking at a mid to late first plus a younger middle six roster player, ie debrusk and a 1st and you determine the + if there’s an extension.
Backlund- closer to his actual value but we all know how ugly the last year or two of that contract will look and I’m not sure a team pays a guaranteed 1st for that, maybe depending on the acquiring team’s playoff success though.
Gio - a 2nd round pick plus more later ones with salary retained. He’s clearly lost a step this year and an acquiring team isn’t going to pay up much more on the chance it gets worse.
Monahan- I really don’t think we get a first round pick back for him. The teams with a clear hole at 2C are in rebuilds and are not giving up futures for a 26 year old set to hit FA in a few years and he isn’t better than the 2C most contending teams already have. I’ve narrowed it down to Florida, Minnesota and Columbus that are a fit for him.
Florida seems content with keeping Wennberg in that slot until lundell is ready. I believe I’ve read previously that Minnesota has no interest in monahan (although that may have been under a different GM). Columbus is an option but they don’t have a ton of prospects left after going for it a couple years ago and aren’t moving their 1st. You may be able to get domi one for one but that would seem counterproductive.
You can maximize your return by taking on bad contracts but given the last year financially I don’t see ownership signing off on that. Also I remind you monahan, giordano, and backlund have NTC’s limiting negotiating power. |

With salary retained (as much as 50%) I could very much see someone offering a 2nd round pick for Derek Ryan. He's pretty much the perfect bottom 6 center. He's good on the dot, right handed, responsible defensively, top PK player and can chip in offensively. For a true contender, perfect 4th line center who can slide up without effort if injuries happen.
I'm pretty sure a team like Washington, Tampa Bay or Carolina would happily dish out a late 2nd round pick for Derek Ryan.
Little reminder : Paul Gaustad went for a 1rst round pick a few years back. - redseerpf
He’s also passed through waivers a couple times this season. He may get a late round pick on deadline day but I don’t think an aav of 1.5 million less gets us a second

I think Markstrom was a two year wonder and now the Flames are stuck with a bad contract and a average goaltender that can’t stop a (frank)ing beach ball. He reminds of Dan Cloutier. - FlamesFan1230
Once Ian Clark gets to CGY you'll be fine for a few seasons lol |

Quite a (frank)ing few years back. Like a decade. And that trade was ripped on then, just as a 2nd for Ryan would be ripped on now.
I mean, Eric Staal was just traded for a 3rd and a 5th, and he’s 10 times the player Ryan is. If the Flames get a 5th for Ryan they should take it and run. |

Bouwmeester and Iginla got bad returns because the team waited so long to trade them. Gaudreau is 27, has been playing with a plug and Monahan for the whole season and is still producing, and he’s on a deal that’s probably close to what he’s been statistically the last season and a half. |

Derek Stepan fetched a 2nd round pick.
Barclay Goodrow fetched a 1rst round pick.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau fetched a first AND second round pick.
Blake Coleman fetched a 1rst round pick.
Andreas Athanasiou fetched two 2nd round picks.
Etc.
A 4 million Backlund with term will absolutely fetch a late 1rst round pick from a contender, thank you very much. - redseerpf
which contender is taking that cap hit for another 3 years?
Contenders dont have space for that contract. Maybe if he was a UFA after this season they could bring him in as a rental.
Colorado - no, dont have the space with young contracts coming up.
Vegas - no space
Tampa - no space and set
Washington - set down the middle
carolina - set down the middle
boston - set down the middle
Toronto - set and no space
Pitt - no space and would probably want to go younger
NYI - no space
Winnipeg - set down the middle
Minnesota, maybe. I just dont think theres much of a market for a 32 year old center with 3 years left at 5.35 per

what, on the cap retention? everything i said remains the same. 4MM is still hard to fit in. Which team do you think can take that cap hit and actually wants it? |

Minnesota might do it if we take rask back but it’s your guess as to how much they’d be willing to give up in terms of draft picks in addition to that

More to go around now that Neal is in Edmonton. Less to go around now that he took his dealer. |

Dunno that that's the deal I'm making, but I wouldn't mind bringing in a younger guy in Gio's stead

If the Flames are trading Gio, it has to be somewhere where he can get a chance to chase the Cup. He's earned that solid. |
