I like this deal for both teams.

Mantha doesn't play motivated hockey for Detroit, and a change of scene could potentially help him become that 40-goal-scorer we've all seen flashes of. Vrana, 1st, 2nd, and Panik (cap dump to make the numbers work) is a great return for what's been a frustrating career in the D.

Washington paid a steep price, but with their aging core, they've upgraded their team today and given Ovechkin and co. the best opportunity they would to win a cup sooner than later. Vrana, like Mantha, has a reputation for frustrating fans and coaches with his effort level. I've always loved his talent level, and maybe suiting up alongside his countrymen Zadina and Hronek will inspire some better habits out of him.

Seeing a lot of Washington/Detroit fans upset and/or thrilled with the trade, but that's mostly due to the perceived overpayment. I'd give Detroit an A for the return and Washington a B+ for getting their guy.

Vrana for Mantha heads up is pretty close. Including a 1st and a 2nd is such an overpayment.

It's not. 2nd pick for taking Panik's contract he's signed for a couple more years, Vrana and 1st probably for Mantha. Vrana is a good player, but hasn't done well with Lavi. He had ups and downs with every single coach here in DC.

Bryan Mac is a pretty good GM, I would wait to judge. We all know Caps are going all in.

👍🏻

Also, check Vrana’s playoff stats. He’s a routine no-show. Mantha? At least he has a track record of showing up in the Q and AHL playoffs. We’ll see if it translates to the NHL.
