One thing I'll give Chiarelli credit for is drafting well. The guy is an absolute idiot, but after taking the reigns, he and the scouting staff picked up some NHL potential players in the later rounds.

From the 2015 draft, Bear, Jones, Morano (who was an Edmonton draft pick) have all played at the NHL level. Paigin looked solid for a while, but he fell off.

From 2016, Benson looks like he's ready to make the NHL next season, possibly in the middle 6. While he may not be the best skater, his passing is insane. Desharains, their 7th rounder has been playing in the AHL and looks like he may have a ceiling of a top 6 dman. Pretty solid for a 7th rounder.

In 2017, Skinner, Samorukov, and Kemp, all 3rd round or later are making an impact that their respective teams. Skinner and Samorukov especially have NHL potential, but you can't sleep on Kemp. Safin and Makismov looked good for awhile, but they've tapered off.

And finally, the 2018 draft featured McLeod (who'll get NHL games this season), Rodrigue, who's been playing a bit better and Kesselring.

Those are some useful picks in the later rounds.

2015- Bear and Jones look good
2016- Benson for being projected as a top 6 when drafted is more Bustson, he was poopty skater in junior and doesn’t have enough skill to compensate for it. Who’s the other guy? Never heard of him and I read a lot of Oiler articles.
2017- Goalies are tough to pick as 17-18 year olds, so let’s see if Skinner gets there first. Russian kid looks good not sure his brain is up to par with his skating though. Kemp pffft.
2018- keep hearing about this McLeod kid but is that all the Great Chia got out of the draft? Rodriguez, you mean the singer?

The great Chirella has 2 sure picks 4 years of drafting. Holland should be getting him to run the scouting department.

Benson has been great this season. Injuries impacted him, but he can definitely play in the NHL. Desharhains may well never play in an NHL game, but to make it to Bakersfield as a 7th round pick is a solid piece of drating. They also drafted Puljujarvi this draft.

Skinner has a .912% and a 2.41 GAA. It has drastically improved and he looks to be a solid prospect for them. I haven't seen much of Samorukov, but I know a lot of fans are high on him. Kemp is a solid pick in the 7th round. He may just be like Desharhains, but still solid for a 7th. Also they drafted Yamamoto.

I mean, this is the draft where Bouchard was picked. Rodrigue is a goaltender. Not having the greatest NHL season, but he's 20 and goalies are weird and take forever to develop, so we'll re-visit this in a few years. Kesselring is another player that Oiler fans are high on, and again, he was a late pick.

"Sure picks" in the late rounds. I didn't include his first rounders, all of which currently play in the NHL (or in Bouchard's case, chill in the press box because Tippet is dumb).

Not all of these prospects will hit, but there are quite a few with NHL potential and some that are developing quickly.

Again, I don't want to defend this idiot. Chiarelli set this team back many years with his poor decision making, including trading a first for (frank)ing Griffin Reinhart, but since 2015 the team has drafted well.

Hell of a game last night! One of the more exciting games I've watched in a while. And the switch over to the Calgary game and seeing Tkachuk lose the puck for the empty net dagger

They have the same amount of goals this season but one is a complete and massive bust while the other is an all-star and captain material for his team.

Yes. Wingers usually don't get a lot of credit for their defense (other than maybe Mark Stone), but Puljujarvi's defense is pretty damn good.

He's also doing things he wasn't doing before playing in Europe again. He's using his body (watch the hit that lead to McDavid's goal), he's getting in the corners, he's scoring and holy poop for a 6'4 guy, he's pretty (frank)ing fast.
