Typical complaints about skating ability and defensive awareness.

Those are common knocks on players and things that are easy to improve.

It would be nice if the Sabres took the approach of drafting players who have shown scoring ability in the D and D-1 years, even if there are the common knocks like defensive awareness and skating ability, especially in the later rounds.

It's how you end up with post first round gems like Robertson and Point.

If your scouting staff's response to drafting a player with a profile like the above in the 2nd round is he's scoring, but...then draft the player and then fire your scouting staff.

Anybody who carries a major junior team deserves a look, especially someone with an acclaimed hockey IQ and strong puck skills. Roberts plays a physical game and backchecks well…but the skating is a major issue. Decent speed but a bad first step has sunk him in the rankings, some believe, placing him late in the first round or in the second. He saw significant time on special teams and isn’t afraid to get in close or in the corners.
