Evander Kane should make 6-7 mil per year. Change my mind.
This message is to everyone who wants to pay Sam Reinhart 6-7 and thinks he’s a top player in the league.
Evander Kane puts up the same numbers and is much tougher

This newfound ability to play center does up Reinhart's value quite a bit.

I’m expecting Ott...

My entire stance, from before Ralph was fired, was to hire an interim to play out the year. At the end of the season, the front office does everything in their power to open up the field to anyone and everyone to see who's out there and who will fit this team the best.

Then Donnie showed what he can do with this particular roster. The skill level is not high here, and the prospects and young players aren't exactly a collection of the Tampa Bay Lightning's top 6. But he's doing an exceptional job of developing these guys and evolving their games. He says this poop on the radio and in pressers, and then you actually see it on the ice. You see guys developing, rapidly improving, playing aggressively, at least trying to drive play.

I know some folks were 'retread or bust', and I don't understand that. The best coaches in the league and throughout history started from nothing. No recognition. Or maybe they were a player who never coached an AHL let alone an NHL team.

I don't know if Steve Ott would be better than Donnie. Nor do I know if BBQ or Gallant would be either. Maybe there's some NHL assistants or AHL coaches out there ready to take the reigns of an NHL team for the first time. The fact is, no one knows if it'll work out for them.

What Kevyn and Jason can, and must ensure is, you find the guy that fits the roster. Donnie fits. So if you're going to let him go, or send him back to be an associate coach, assuming he doesn't get a head coaching gig somewhere else, you need to be certain that the next guy can do a better job with this roster, and a better job developing these players than he did. This is the first coach since Lindy Ruff that actually knows what he's doing. Don't (frank) it up.

I know Gallant is a popular name, and he does have a bit of a track record, but I the way he was fired mid-season by two teams says "red flag" to me. If it happened once, I would say the team made a mistake, but for it to happen again, and so soon after, tells me that there are internal things with him that might not be right. It may be as simple as he's difficult to get along with, but there has to be more than meets the eye.

Samson is a top player in the league, his stats prove that much. With a goal tonight, he would finally break into the top10 in goal scoring in the league (he's currently tied for 13th). He also has one more goal than that STL player we all whine about trading away for peanuts.

Evander is tougher. Samson is younger, is better at defense and can play multiple positions. I know you're firmly aboard the Samson Hate Wagon, but, personally, I think this was a miss. 6-7 is almost assuredly what he will get here or elsewhere...

That's an argument I've tried to make before. But there's no substance, only conjecture. But yes, he was getting results, you don't can a guy mid season for good results. I think if I remember correctly, the teams tried to play it off like 'we need to be better' or some poop, even though Vegas was still like 2nd in the division. My guess, the guy's an aszhole and pisses off the FO.

He's the interesting one to me, does he go to Seattle, or could the relationships with Adams and Karmanos be enough to pull him away from Carolina.

I was extremely, extremely retread or bust. BBQ or Gallant. With Gronbeard as a dark horse that would make me twitch, but ok, if Adams deemed him worthy.

But as I’ve eaten multiple helpings of crow on MittlePhat. And a couple helpings of crow on sir tallness. I will take my servings of crow on Donnie. It’s all I’ve wanted to watch for years. Fun, entertaining hockey. Show me the growth. Show my the north south up tempo. He’s made buffalo hockey entertaining with a bunch of kids and a winger playing center...

Give Donnie a 2 year contract with a playoff clause that triggers a substantial pay raise and 2 year extension is he gets to the playoffs in two season...

I’ll jump on the bandwagon. Lock up the meatball!

Well if he breaks free from Carolina, and Dundon doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would let that kind of coach break free, Rod The Bod would need to be in for an interview.

Good post. I think the attitude of retread or bust was birthed from having little to no faith in the Pegulas. Which is absolutely fair, mind you. Hiring one of the retreads, you're ensuring that you're putting NHL experience and winning pedigree behind the bench. However, it doesn't ensure your success, because you need a coach who plays to your players strengths. You need a great communicator, teacher, developer and trusted friend. The Sabres had coaches that had some of those qualities in the past, but finally have someone now who can employ all of those characteristics.

The Pegulas fell ass-backwards into Granato. Hopefully they don't (frank) this up.
