I mean yeah that's part of the problem. The other part is, even with lesser competition, as shown last night, he's still bad. If you look at his base analytics from 2017-2018, he had the best season of his career because he was actually utilized at least somewhat properly. Extremely heavy offensive deployment.
- TheSabresTaco

So is he actually bad?
Or is he misused by a bad team against good players?

Those are also very recent developments, correct?
And u coincidentally (or not) avoided the question....

Wouldn’t those numbers be low fir just about any defenseman who plays top pairing minutes against the toughest competition when on terrible teams for the overwhelming majority of his career???

- jdfitz77

To some degree. Not that extent

The issue is that the Sabres best players are worse with him on the ice vs other players who also play defense

Jack Eichel posts worse numbers while with Ristolainen than he does someone like Jake McCabe. By a decent margin

McCabe also plays tough minutes against good opposition

No, if he was a better defenseman in his own zone, these numbers wouldn't be so bad. Take a look at McCabe. Similar years and competition. This was the first year he was quite good, but the other years he was fine. Less offense, more defense.

Both. He's "bad" at defense against all competition. But was also misused as a top defenseman.

Is he a bad hockey player? That's subjective, and my opinion as to why boss holds him in high regards.

However, based on years of data, he is poor at defending top and average competition.

To follow up on this, last night one of the stats guys on twitter noted that there were 24 shots against with Risto on the ice and only a handful for (I forget the exact number). He had 6 blocked shots which sound impressive in a vacuum but it's a terrible number in context.
- Slump Buster

Blocking 6 shots in one game is such a good teammate stat. Trying to put his body on the line in a meaningful season and game.

Sure risto's not tough. 😀

your looking at the next buffalo Sabres captain. Heart, bleads blue and gold. ( prior probably being finnish) . He's gonna groom 6k and help him become a professional.
Look at how bryson has performed under his wing.
Arguably the best suprise this season.

I'm partially satisfied that I was gone for four hours and this silly Ristolainen poop continues.

In my for some reason arrogant opinion, I'm going to go with Mittelstadt being the surprise of the season. If that's cool with you.

Well now that we got the definition out of the way, how am I exaggerating my own worth? I'm genuinely curious.

Driedger should be a target now, especially with Knight already getting the call.
- Buff36

Knight playing last night doesn’t mean too much, really. Kind of the added sweetener to get him to sign now was to get him in a game this season. FL is sharing AHL team with TB this year so it’d be hard to get him many games there. He’s probably better off being around/practicing with the Panthers instead of being in Syracuse right now. Q already said the goalie rotation now returns to how it’s been all year. I wouldn’t doubt if their plan is for Knight to be AHL starter for next season, and try to get Driedger to sign for one more year (or two).
Buffalo should try to sign him as ufa if/when he gets there.

That makes sense
But are those tough minutes McCabe is playing & the time he’s out there with Eichel lining up?

I’m not saying they aren’t
Just wondering if the stats you’re looking at are that detailed

That's are very good point. Mitts looked good at one point as a young nhl player.

Bryson out of thin air. I hope I havent crossed the line with my original post or this opinion 👑

Well kinda meant that, but what you said is right. I would still make him a target if he makes it to FA

My problem here is that analytics over these years have also tried to tell us that Franson & Pysyk are good defensemen

I think u guys could make more compelling cases if u listed the complete numbers of each defensemen year after year- including the competition they play against & the zone starts

Is there a Corsi based stat that takes into account either of those?
Bc imo, they’re both MAJOR factors

Do a quick search of mccabe and Ristolainen on hockey reference and natural stat trick. Don't take our word for it, look for yourself.

Franson was "awesome" because he managed good corsi, somehow. Analytics today are much more advanced than the Tannerytics of yesteryear.

In saying that, they have a ways to go.

I don’t consider myself an advanced stats expert but I don’t watch all 30 teams that aren’t the Sabres and pretend my eyes can tell anyone who’s good or not

I also am not just gonna look at point totals

There’s A LOT. Of 35-40 point players who are much better overall and provide a more positive impact than some 50-60 point players

Anyone else think we got the best player in the draft with Cozens? At first I didn't ike the pick and wanted Zegras but its starting to look like Cozens could be the best player in the draft.
- sabresfan69

I think it will be pretty equal all around Dach, zegras, cozens will end up like the 2003 draft
And Cole will be the Perry

When was the last time any player hit any kind of milestone against us? They were tracking Ovis route up the all-time goals list and not once did he passs anyone against us..

I think Hughes is being slept on.

Problem unless he improves his shot he’ll need an elite sniper to be effective.

Didn't catch the game last night. How did Caggiula look ? I hear he wasn't noticeable. How about Hall ... still sucky ? And from what I've gathered elsewhere, we had our chances - just couldn't hit the net or Rask made the save. Does that sum it up ?

I really don’t feel like putting in the time

I’m not totally against analytics by any means,
but you’re one of the few who go by them that can admit they’re flawed

They’re just so “incomplete” imo

And even if they did become complete, or at least more so....
the samples sizes of icetime in a season will likely be pretty small when you break them down into truly comparable instances between players
And that just won’t really give you much usable info imo

Risto has been in an extremely unfavorable situation for years
It would be one thing if ppl here were saying he’s a ”#1” defenseman, but NO ONE IS

So it’s really just gone beyond overboard with all the repetitive bashing of him for not being one
And there’s no need to exaggerate & call him a bottom pair guy either
