the brass loves risto

still think there is an extension conversation this summer

- homiedclown

if thats the case i think no chance granato is hired then

he's scaling back risto to be 4/5 d man, and risto wont be taking a pay cut here without testing the market

I really don't understand this organizations love for Risto. How could Risto want to extend here, yes he doesn't seem to intelligent but damn he doesnt look happy, ever.

It comes down to the fact that we can't justify his salary because he doesn't work the first power play. That's really it. If he can't even defend bad competition, why is he even here. He did, to his credit, have a better night last night.

aside from the blowout last night, risto played over 20 minutes in every other game for granato

how many 5th d men do that, none

you guys should be better than this

because last night is the first time he wasnt being used as a crash test dummy on the powerplay in front of the net, getting 5+ powerplay minutes a night

yeah take the outlier as your focal point

I mean dahlin is going to get 6 and a half minutes every night on the pp

last night risto had the second most shifts for d men

the previous 2 games the most shifts

not typical for a 5th d man

last 5 games 5 on 5 risto is 5th, 4th, 5th, 5th, 4th in 5v5 TOI among D

in 4 of those he is 2nd all situations TOI among D because he played forward on the powerplay

if this trend continues and they sign him to an extension we are absolutely (frank)ed

terry loves him
kim loves him
adams loves him

botts loved him

murray loved him

half this board said he was a goner over 2 years ago

yet still here he is, and will probably be protected on the expansion draft

and granato clearly doesn't love him

so if both granato and ristolainen are back next year then the front office is the disaster we have all feared

at least if they extend risto and sign a different coach, they'll be in unity in a decision i disagree with, but if they extend a guy the coach clearly doesn't like then oh my god we're doomed

if risto is playing 5 or 6 more minutes on special teams then guys like bryson and joker

it makes sense they would get a few more seconds of 5 on 5 ice time

it's laughable when you are touting him as their 5th d man, when he gets the most shifts or 2nd most shifts and literally every other game had over 20 minutes of ice time and is pretty much always first or second in ice time pending on game flow

The team has finished in the bottom ten for going on a decade.

One of the constants has been playing Risto for half the game. Coincidence? I think not.

what am i looking at here? his total ice time being about the same while being added to the powerplay

thats what everyone has been begging for. shelter him 5 on 5 and let him play the powerplay.

aka not a guy you extend as a 1D

This has especially been true with Rasmus Ristolainen, who was playing exceptionally well with McCabe before his injury (to the tune of a 56.8 expected goals for percentage (xGF%) for the duo, per MoneyPuck), but has struggled when paired with the likes of Matt Irwin

i don’t know why you're arguing with me

granato is playing him comfortably 4th lowest TOI 5 on 5 and has been playing him AS A FORWARD on the powerplay

my point is simply those 2 do not belong on the same team construction. if its not one or the other we are (frank)ed.

you are calling him their 5th d man

post stupid things and I will call you out

he still is first or second in ice time
he is still first or second in shifts

his 5 on 5 play is down due to special team ice time, hence game flow, and playing him with a kid 5 on 5

you really should be better than this

Viking55 is an easy target.

Obviously he has flaws, but blaming the last decade of losses on him is deflecting.

The Sabres have been a black hole of effortless overpaid looooosers.

I'd be shocked if he's exposed for the kracken

McCabe had a good year. But if I have a chance at Savard, I'm going there instead.

I don't hate Risto. I don't hate McCabe, Girgensons, etc.

But those players have that losing stank all over them.

I'm ready to move on from them and really change the dynamic of this team. And with this influx of youth, I feel it's the best time to do it.

i said 4th/5th, and you're wedging it strictly to 5th to try to emphasize your side of the coin, tricky tricky

not only is his 5 on 5 ice time down, he's also now playing easier matchups. another indicator that he is not their top pair d man.

if you want to call him granato's 1/2 D because he's playing lots of shifts as a forward on the powerplay, then you're the one cracked out here dude

we'll see what happens now that he's back off PP1. in our first game where that happened he had his lowest ice time in ages, instead of getting more 5 on 5 ice time like you are suggesting because of game flow
