Who was the coach during the 'mostly ugly' the past 2 years, and how did Dahlin look both before and after said coach?
- kingcong39

prior to stank he looked like housley--great offensive potential, absolutely horrendous on defense...

he's made great strides since they got rid of stank, however imo, that doesn't get him to $10M on a long-term deal

People aren't going to agree but Ristolainen has more value around the league then people think

This is GREAT news.
Like what in general terms could we anticipate getting back?

We were told that Sam for Tk was laughable.

What do you think a reasonable trade would be for him?

good...i hope you're right...however, if he's moved prior to expansion draft, like we've been discussing, what are the teams that have the cap-space and protection space to trade for him?
- Michael Pachla

8 years 50 million for dahlin.

Do not let anyone offer him a 5 year aho type deal, where we have to match, overpay and get stuck shorter term.

Dahlin seems like a guy that " break's"the non rfa signing trend. Being a defenseman, we've paid for his learning curve.... all eye are on his pedigree...

The problem with that is I do not think he will be a center he's a winger.

So we have a massive hole if we trade jack

maybe but dahlin would come out of an 8 yr. deal, riding the peak of his prime at 29 yrs. old...

am curious, what are you thinking in all three cases?

- Michael Pachla

Bridge deals for both Dahlin and Jokiharju because I don't believe either has any interest in signing long term, and a 3 year deal for Mittelstadt.

Think of Dahlin this way: You're an employee who has a strong amount of control on what you earn. If you can negotiate short term deals, say 2 years each time, that allows you to reassess the market and be paid appropriately every 2 years (that would be 2 deals as he's 21 now and has 4 years left to go until he's a UFA). Then, when you hit UFA, you don't take an 8 year deal because you'll be 33 when that deal is over. Instead, you take a 4 or 5 year deal, that way you can ideally sign one more big dollar/AAV deal when you're 29-30.

I don't think there's a prayer that Dahlin would sign an 8 year deal for even $7M per when more than half that deal will be in a post flat cap era.

If you're his agent, would you suggest Dahlin sign that deal? I sure wouldn't.

My felling is buffalo will draft Beniers to be on the safe side if we do move him in the future

I don't think Dahlin or his agent even consider the deal you suggested above. Not nearly enough dollars to eat 4 years of UFA status.

I agree that he's not worth $10M per right now, but $80M for 8 years is likely what the team would have to offer to get him to consider missing out on 4 UFA seasons.

I was just thinking we look about to fall out of last place with NJ and the Ducks pretty much in a free fall. I would like Bernier just was thinking we might not get the chance.

or sign a max-length deal now that takes you to 29, like erik karlsson did then cash in again on another max-length deal...

i get what you're saying, but this isn't the nba

the consensus here and almost everywhere is that the top four or five, maybe even down to seven, are almost interchangeable...no?

Karlsson signed for an AAV that was just above 10% of the cap, which would be $8.1M per for Dahlin.

Would Dahlin sign an 8 year deal for $66M? Maybe, but I don't think he would.

Would you offer him that deal right now to get him signed long term?

You're trading a minimum of 3 years of an ELC for s $7M cap hit next season and then quite possibly a $9M cap hit for at least the 22-23 season?

I thought you just said on the last page your deal would be $48M to $56M, leaning more towards the $48M number for an 8 year deal?

If you're ok offering $66M for 8 years, he might sign it.
