I would go with Samsonov. He is the 1st round pick and the 'future' so to speak. I like Vanacek and he is a great story this year but very lately has shown why he will probably be a back up or at best a 1b, which isn't bad at all. The Caps need to see this playoff what they have so that they can decide whether to protect Sammy in expansion draft. Both players still have room to improve their games also.

Vanecek had better numbers in Ahl and has them better now. Draft selection means nothing.
None of them is great at this moment.

I think Samsonov is coming on a bit lately and after overcoming Covid I think he needed some time to get back to being himself. I would like to see the Caps start rolling with Samsonov three of every four games and get him ready to start in the playoffs. If he falters Vanicek has been good enough to start as well. I think a decision has to be made if Samsonov is going to be the clear cut number one in Washington. If he is not you had better move him and that would be a mistake imo. Hopefully his bad luck of injuries, covid etc are behind him. Samsonov for me for #1.

Goalies take time and Samsonov has the pure bred elite skills and I would not give up on him. Look at Carter Hart, a potential elite goaltender who has regressed this year but that does not mean he is not your projected #1.

A day later I would say we have the answer, right Brian. Samsonov showed why he is the #1 guy and why he was drafted being a potential Vasilevski. After the shutout win I think the Caps should roll with him and see what happens. I suspect another shutout and a few more wins.
