Honestly? I'm happy Mete has found a role and a career resurrection in Ottawa. It was a shame to see him go, and I look forward to watching his career progress... Just not against Montreal.

Great takes as always Michael. It is funny how attrition and subtraction have been the greatest assets to the Senators this year. The kids are alright.

Thumbs up, agreement ...

great write up and blogger serving the Sens fans well.i usually read this before or even if read mainstream. Its a much more accurate picture.

One thing i wonder about ....is tkachuk gone rogue or coaching not reigning in enough. I love the player but sometimes feel he is doing his own thing ( kind of led to first goal against last night).its a slight concern not overwhelming.

Looks like Chabot is out for the last four game, JBrown too. Good chance to reward some good play down on the farm, and finally give Brannstrom/Mete/JBD some decent PP time.

Chabot gets 95% of the PP time given to our defenders for most of this season, and it's only gotten more egregious since Reilly was traded.

Need to diversify the people running the PP if we want to see any growth as a team. Can't just rely on one guy for this stuff.

Is it Alsing that gets put in? Lassi Thomson? Im curious how they'll use the opportunities.

Well, at least we'll see JBD in some games... right?

I'd love to see Thomson in at least one game, even if he really needs a lot more time in Belleville.

Agree that Gustavsson should be protected, but I still think Dorion will protect Murray due to optics to cover up his trade to get Murray

Don't the optics look better if he exposes Murray? If he loses him, he shaved money from the cap. If Seattle passes on him, Dorion will have retained a good young goalie prospect as a result of his running Murray in a claiming race.

can't see him being that silly.....to protect Murray.

Murray's play and injuries have shown us we have a collection of capable goalies OTHER than him.

There will be 30 other teams having to protect goalies. I'd have to look at rosters closely, but I suspect there are more intriguing options than Ottawa's crop.

Putting the goggles as an outsider:

Murray - Overpaid, often injured, can play well but inconsistent
Hogberg - One of the worst positional goalies in the game today
Daacord - Very small NHL sample size and never had much prospect hype
Gutasson - Very small NHL sample size but did have decent prospect hype

Not sure Seattle is bashing down the door to get those guys? Would hate to see one of the younger guys turn into a Drieger situation though.

I don;t think it's just the goalies though. You have to look at who else on Ottawa they would take in their place.

Any decent player will be protected, so then if it comes down to Chris Tierny or Abromov, they may be more inclined to roll the dice on one of Ottawa's goalies as a backup.

How many goalies did Vegas take?

Nick Kyprios asks:

"Who's Gonna Stop Tom Wilson?"

Saw one response saying only his teammate (Chara) has the size to handle him.

I am not promoting a match. But Brady is a tough fighter.

By the time the Sens play the Caps next season, very good chance that Brady has the size to match or better Wilson.

As I said, I don't want to see Brady fighting. But, if he went head to head with Wilson he might have the entire NHL supporting him.

Reaves could take him. Other than that...

The whole NHL would fall in love with Brady if he fought Wilson, but I would really notw ant to see it.

I entirely agree. Nobody from an Ottawa perspective wants to see Brady drop the gloves. But, Brady does have the size. He is very quick despite his huge frame. I do not want to see it happen. But if it does happen, I would not want to miss it.

Why is this Brady Tkachuk's and Ottawa's problem?

The love affair people have with hating Tom Wilson has been a crazy development over the past couple of years. Like I get it, but it seems people want to see worse happen to Tom Wilson than what Tom Wilson has done...

It's not impossible that they might protect Murray, but that mindset is dangerously narcissistic. Trying to make a single trade look good after the fact is objectively irrelevant in the context of a multi-year rebuild... and falls more into the category of potentially making a bad situation worse. At the end of the day, there was never going to be a way for them to protect all of Hogberg, Daccord, and Gustavsson. But they can at least try to make sure they protect the one of those 3 they have the most confidence in regarding long-term potential, and right now that looks like Gustavsson.

I think we're looking at a potential Malcolm Subban parable from the Vegas expansion draft... not a goaltender for now, but one playing in the AHL in the immediate short-term. Plus, you have to look at the opportunity cost of picking a goaltender prospect, and the vast majority of Ottawa's best or even average talent is exempt from the expansion draft. That's why for my money, protecting one of Gustavsson/Daccord is so critical... they're precisely what Seattle might like to have in their initial prospect system, to eventually back up whichever more NHL-ready goaltenders they pull from other teams. And personally, I think there's a lot more pedigree with Gustavsson to attract Seattle's attention.

Cassius Clay vs Sonny Liston was one to the great stories in sport. Everybody loves to hate the villain. And, at the same time, cheer for the brash kid who refuses to bow down to the bully. You are probably right. Tom Wilson is probably not nearly as bad as the NY media makes him out to be. But, nobody wants the facts to ruin a good story.

Not sure where the 'good story' is? Tonight's game is setting up an awful like the Bertuzzi/Moore incident but if that entertains people, so be it.

Hopefully, Wilson willfully drops the gloves to a willing combatant and they go at it fair and square, be done with it, and move on.

Fans, media, and the league have made Tom Wilson into a circus. Reading comments on twitter was sad, scary, funny, and concerning all at the same time.

There are some guys out there... Simmonds, Reaves, Lucic, Caufield... But there are less and less of those...

It's bout 95% the league's fault we've gotten to this point. It also doens't help that as people have said, it's hard to find a willing combatant for Wilson.

Same people who want him taken down are the same people that would want him on their team. He’s like Marchand in that sense.

The fact that this story has taken over the last couple of days is so crazy. Do people watch hockey? This stuff happens. Are we going to hang this guy because of the name on his sweater?

To me, the Gostisbehere play was a rightful suspension, and potentially much more dangerous, than a guy man handling someone jumping on his back.

Let’s be real, if Wilson WANTED, to put a beating, the gloves would’ve been off.
