Apples and oranges. Both amazing.

I agree.different players and different results.both are great players doing amazing things this yr.both of them have become more defensively responsible this yr and are reaping the benefits of it.one will win the richard and one will win the hart.matter of personal preference as to who people choose.can't help but appreciate what both are doing tho.

McDavid hands down. Because Matthews is creepy and has the stupidest moustache ever.

Yes, Matthews is really creepy. but the girls seem to like his vibe and he manages to disguise his creepiness with some weird hip youngster look, see attached link for example:
https://www.google.com/ur...agYiNuPACFQAAAAAdAAAAABAO

His moustache is no doubt disturbing, and this image is terrifying:
https://www.google.com/ur...ioaCNuPACFQAAAAAdAAAAABAN

but it seems to allow him to score more goals than anyone else.

McDavid is socially awkward, which is clearly illustrated by this photo:
https://www.google.com/ur...svraMuPACFQAAAAAdAAAAABAO

Nobody likes socially awkward people, while creepy people like Matthews and Dexter can often blend in.

Unfortunately, we learned a couple weeks ago that he is only a third-tier player in the NHL. Some very knowledgable fans with a purely objective opinion told us so.

In comparing those numbers . These players played the same 6 teams all year. You begin to figure out what works. Some guys struggle against some teams . If this wasn’t a Covid season I can’t see matthews get 60 goals or even 50.. McDavid can easily get 100 points every year.

yes, definitely. If it was not a covid season McDavid would only be around 70 points and Matthews would have no more than 12 or so goals, because no other teams got to play the same opponents more than 6 times, right?

McDavid is the deadlier offensive player. He is a generational playmaker and elite goal scorer.

Matthews is an elite goal scorer, but a much better two-way player. He is pretty strong defensively as he takes away passing lanes, throws hits and frequently strips pucks. He's got more size, which he does use to his advantage on both ends of the ice. On top of that he's great at faceoffs.
Matthews is still a strong playmaker, and should be a consistent 40+ assist guy if he ever plays 82 games. He plays most of his minutes with Marner and Hyman, neither of which are pure goal scorers.
The leafs power play has been terrible this season. Maybe it's a case of Matthews and rest of the Leafs start studded squad sucking, but it's more likely an issue with the team's system/coaching. If this is the case, you can assume Matthews Goals/Assists totals would see a nice boost.
Matthews may not be the playmaker that McDavid is, but he is one of the best Offensive players in the NHL. To call him one dimensional is frankly ignorant.

That's your opinion, thanks for sharing it. Absolutely Matthews is gifted, he scores goals, and lots of them.

However, McDavid is hands down a better player than Matthews, there's no question. I don't care how big Matthews is, I don't care if he takes faceoffs. By speculating what Matthews might be able to do doesn't make it a reality. They both bring different tools to the work bench, but, McDavid is heads and shoulders better than anyone in the league. To suggest Matthews is in the same stratosphere as McDavid, is quite frankly, ignorant.

Just so you're aware, Alex Ovechkin has a 65 goal season on record. Lets not pretend we have to go back to Gretz. The greatest goalscorer in NHL history is currently playing.

My main concern with your comments was that you deemed Matthews to be one dimensional lol, which is a dumb statement.

I would agree that McDavid is the better player, but I would also disagree with your assessment that they aren't in the same stratosphere.

I'm a Leafs fan, and therefore biased. I believe that most Leafs fans would have a tough time deciding to trade Mattews for McDavid straight up. Most fans including myself, would probably do the deal based on the sole fact that McDavid has more term, and is more likely to re-sign in Toronto. If it weren't for the contract situation, you would have most fans split down the middle.

If an entire fanbase would have a tough time trading their best player for arguably one of the best players of all time, then yes, I would consider them to be in the same ballpark.

In term's of ability, Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer in hockey history. He's never done 50-50. That so called bench-mark isn't relevant in today's game.
- Izzo
Bah! Ovie doesn't even own the most goals scored in a season record. I'd argue someone by the name of Wayne Gretzky is easily the greatest goal score in hockey history and he was more of a playermaker...that's just how elite Gretzky was.

McDavid's accomplishment is much more impressive.

It's awesome that Matthews has 40 and is most likely going to win the Richard but it's not close to what McDavid is doing.

I'll take a Stanley Cup win over Matthews personal accomplishments. Hell, I'll take a playoff round win.

McDavid is the best hockey player in the world, hands down. Matthews is far from one-dimensional as someone previously indicated. Are there parts of Matthews game that are stronger than McDavid's? Sure. But McDavid is the best. Hands down.

Referencing the previous Leafs fan post I do not know one Leafs fan who wouldn't trade Matthews for McDavid. I would do it in a heartbeat.

Can you imagine how many Ovi and Matthews would have scored on dudes like Darren Pang? Gretz was putting clappers over the goalies’ shoulders from the blue line. It’s sooo much harder to score now than it was in the 80s and 90s, and the biggest difference is the goaltenders

There was also no such thing as a 6’3” dman who could skate and move the puck, but the goalies have evolved even more

To call Matthews one-dimensional, or to say the division is weak, is not the right understanding.

Same stratosphere, but still McDavid is the best player in the league.

The most laughable thing you say though is that Matthews is one dimensional and then say "I don't care about goal scoring or 2-way play, or faceoffs, or using the body so those don't count. I only care about total points. And since McDavid has the most total points he's the best overall multidimensional player."
