IMO tax implications are a bigger issue. A player in Flordia making $8m a year is equal to a player making 10.5m in Ontario.

I have a feeling if tax implications favoured Canadian teams - rather than teams in the south where the NHL wants to see more $ like Texas, Florida, and Nevada - things would be addressed right away to balance it out

If this is such a massive issue to you then you could always, you know, ...vote for lower taxes? But if not, how about while we're at it they take royalty potentials from players in larger markets since that isn't fair to smaller ones?

I really think this isn't that big of a consideration for most players. Yes, it's something, but they're already subject to a complicated tax calculation because of their time on the road, playing games in different provinces, states, countries... Then there's the big stars with signing bonuses. Auston Matthews isn't paying Ontario taxes on his huge cheque he gets while sitting in his mansion in Arizona on July 1. Good chance he's not paying Canadian federal on it either. I'm sure most of the players that fight for signing bonuses are doing the same thing.

Perhaps its only worth noticing because its never really been noticed before involving high end players. Maybe treat it like players who played in the KHL. If you havent played a single game by a certain date of the season, then you are exempt from playing in the playoffs.

Maybe Players who are on LTIR for more than 3 months should be exempt from the first round of the playoffs. To be eligible, they must play at least one game before the playoffs. Which will be counted towards the cap, meaning teams will have to be careful at trade deadline day.

The player's are subject to the tax laws of where they earned the money. For instance in the lightnings case, if they play a game against the rangers then they are subject to NY taxes for the portion of their salary that covers that game. So a little over half the games are under FL taxes for the lightning each season. Where it really matters is just the cost of living, which is significantly less in FL than it is in most of the northern cities. But that has to do purely on the voting choices of those cities, states, provinces. They themselves are the only ones to blame if they want to make taxes a real issue.

If the cap is 81.5 million, you can only dress 81.5 million worth of players per playoff game

So, the lightning, if they wanted Kucherov and Stamkos would have to healthy scratch 13 million worth of players

How hard is that?

[quote=smkuchta]Vancouver played by the rules when they signed Luongo to a 12 year contract. The NHL approved the contract then years later decided it was unfair and they now have a 3 year re-capture penalty of ~3M/year. Unfortunately Luongo didn't have a career ending "mystery" injury like every other player with a similar contract...i.e. Hossa, Pronger, Seabrook, Zetterberg etc.

Fully agree EXCEPT Prongers was not a mystery. Philly would have killed to have him play longer here, We've been missing him ever since.

Yes, but then it gets muddier with signing bonuses. It's a bonus paid in the off-season, which you would "earn" wherever your home happens to be for filing purposes. This is where their accountants earn their salary.

Yeah it's a joke and everyone knows it. TB GM: "hey Nikita, you wanna collect your entire $9.5M to fake a year long injury and not play until playoffs?"
Kucherov: "sure...see ya in May"

That's a lot of words to express butthurt.

Yeah, sit out, do nothing, hide, don't be seen, don't go out, fake an injury.

Crooked team doctors, corrupt league officials.

Do you folks hear yourselves?

Occam's razor - genuine injury, timely surgery, typical recovery time, GM exploiting cap loopholes.

It's nothing new. The Lightning aren't the first, the only, or the last.

Tons of butthurt. Put some salve on that poop.

I’m not butthurt about it. But it does seem some teams get penalized while others don’t. Vancouver and NJ both got in poop for cba circumventing contacts and others clearly didn’t. Chicago was the first to use the ltir loophole and get Kane back in the playoffs. Leafs use ltir to circumvent all the time. I know the league is getting complaints from some teams and I bet there will be some things coming down this summer to put a stop to it all.

...Do you really think 35 words is a lot? It took you twice as many just to complain about people being butthurt and misrepresent (or just misunderstand) Occam’s razor.

Tampa flaunting the rules could be "fixed" retroactively just like the NHL did against Vancouver.

- smkuchta

I'm not going to go through every player you listed, but Pronger? A stick in the eye with major concussion symptoms which turned into depression. At times he couldn't leave his room where there was any tiny bit of light, but that was a mystery?

I think it's ridiculous that Kucherov is allowed to return, he's been healthy for a long time. If you don't play for the whole regular season there should be some kind of penalty. Tampa played the system and are laughing at the league

If your on LTIR and haven't played a game before the trade deadline, you most come of and play a set amount of games after the trade deadline, or you can't be added to the roster for the playoffs.

Absolutely not fair. Cap should count in the playoffs too. They lied about the players still being injured obviously. Cheaters!
- tkearle

Agreed! Good job for them playing the system though. Hope they get swept by FLA

Ok. What we should do is raise the salary cap to $150m. Toronto, Rangers et al would rule. If you can’t deal with that Miami or TB then sell your franchise. Discounted tickets and tiny local tv right deals can only go so far.
I mean. If you are going to play the capitalist card, at least do your homework.
