Can we take the latest tweak in the CBA (last year) re: retirement recapture penalties to put together the following deal for Giroux: 8 years 24 mil, AAV 3 mil, structured the following way:

Years 1-3: 6.33 million salary paid each year.
Years 4-8: Veteran min (about 800 k for 5 years apiece).

Handshake agreement: Giroux retires after at least 5 years and no earlier. The cap recapture penalty is limited to AAV (3 m) years 6-8, by which time the salary cap should rise by way more than that, so we essentially get 5 more years of Roo at 3 mil a year after which it is as though he is off the books.

I think there is a cap on how much the salary can swing in any direction year to year.

"Listen, my No. 1 interest is Jack Eichel, you know what I mean? You gotta look after yourself. You gotta look after what's best for yourself," he said. "The organization has a similar job to do, which is to look out for what's best for the Buffalo Sabres. It's tough. Things haven't been, I guess, really black and white. We're all trying to educate ourselves in this situation and what would be best moving forward. There's been some tough conversations. But I have to do what's best for me. I'm only going to play hockey for so long. I'm 24 years old. Hopefully I have many more good years in this amazing game left. But I have to take care of myself. It's been tough at times. But I'll come out on the other end of it."

You are right. I just checked.

https://www.prohockeyrumo...ogy-player-contracts.html

This is the something like the best we can do with variability caps:

(8 years, 24 mil)

year 1: 3 mil
Years 2-4: 4 mil
Years 5-8: 2.125 million apiece.

With this salary, he will not retire, I presume, but we can just keep him on the roster years 6-8 and not play him. Salary cap will increase enough by then to easily swallow up the 2.125.

EDIT: Correction - 2.25

Hmm. I got the inarticulate rather than immature vibe. A fairly transparent opening salvo in a 'trade me' war.

I read it as "trade me I don't want to play on a loser"

Is anyone planning on going to 97.5 Fanfest this year?

If so we should get a group together there. I have a feeling Lindros might be a speaker.

Just a feeling since A.I. was there last time and Eric has come around since.

Well, if you averaged almost a ppg while playing next to the likes of Okposo, Reinhart, Skinner, Kane and so on and for a terrible, terrible franchise and could possibly have Panarin on your wing, would you blame him for that sentiment?

I'm waiting for the season ending game and feeling depressed. Thinking back to how the season ended last year I was again angry with the loss to the Islanders, but encouraged at prospects of years to come. I was lloking forward to seing more of the same, or better. Oscar and Nolan would surely help. The defense had a very good year, Hayes and JVR played well. Farabee and Frost had a year of pro hockey under their belts and Hart was finally the answer in goal. The only real questions were if G and Voracek weren't gonna hit the wall before the youngsters could be real Stanley Cup contenders. What a difference a year makes. I guess that's what keeps me going after 45 years of ultimate failures. Next year will be different from this one. I really have no interest in proposing trades, or guessing who the Kraken (God, I hate that name) select, or who Fletcher gets off the free agent heap. They don't listen to my opinion. I absolutely know only one thing, ite gonna be a real long summer.

They’re literally giving Flyers tickets away for next year just for getting vaccinated.

This is some poop the Sixers woulda done during the process. Seriously, when was the last time the Flyers ever gave out tickets en masse?

What a poop show this franchise has become.

But, but.... he's on a team that has a first-overall draft pick (Dahlin), two second-overall picks (himself and Reinhart) and multiple other top-eight picks (Cozens, Mittelstadt, Ristolainen). That's 30 percent of their starting roster. So maybe being in perpetual rebuild mode is no guarantee of building a winner, either.

I guess I am just not a Gaudreau fan. He certainly has speed and skill which I think this Flyers team needs, but he is small and is not a playoff performer. I would prefer speed with size, grit, and leadership.
- jd250

Also don't think gaudreau will take an appropriate salary. He's maybe a 4 mill winger who expects 6.

Does it really matter? They should only give out team awards when they make the playoffs.

I hear you, but honestly I'm ok with Couturier or Provorov being those voices....

No way. We need a Jason Smith type.

A disappointing year for sure. Not really sure what they will look to do. Are they really as bad as their record? I would say yes. At least how they played for the majority of the year. I still am excited about the future but I do think they need to change the mix of players. I would really like them to try and establish an identity....a Flyer indentity.

Tell me if you heard this one before: Provey reverses the puck and turns it over, Sanheim is in the corner, Provey chases another Devil to the other corner and the slot is completely uncovered for an easy tap in goal. Perhaps the Flyers should try a different d-zone coverage scheme next year??

Off to a great start. It’s a Must lose for the draft
