What big trades has he done? Dougie had to go as it was reported there was a rift in the locker room between him and everyone. Other than that it looks like a bunch of nothingburgers and losses.

Lazar acquired for Jokipakka and Formenton
Elliott acquired for Kyrou and Nordgren
Parsons and Koumontzis for Hudler
Dougie acquired for Shenshyn, Lauzon, and Forsbacka-Karlsson
Lindholm and Hanifin for Fox, Hamilton, Ferland
Neal for Lucic
Rittich for a 3rd
Bennett and a 6th for Heineman and a 2nd.

Which of these is a big trade? And are any surefire wins? Most are losses or close to equal, and none are "big"

]Lazar trade Meh
Elliott was a tie
Hurdler was time to move on
Dougie was a big win
Lindholm Hanifin was a win Fox wasn’t signing here or Carolina
Lucic was a win we still get Edmontons 3rd
Rittich ‘s time was up I consider this a win as we got another pick
Bennett

And when Smith craps the bed in the first round so will the Oilers.

The new NHL is all about north-south hockey with speedy forwards who activate their wheels in the neutral zone and crash the net (McDavid, Mackinnon, Matthews, etc.). Calgary is built around players slowing down the tempo and trying to dangle their way around the blueline looking for the fancy pass (JH, Mony, Tkachuk, etc.).

Even if the Flames add Eichel, this team is just not built the right way to seriously compete in this league.

- redseerpf

None of the teams you are talking about have won anything. If we got back to the team we had 2 years ago, where we we were 2nd in the league, we would be closer to that makeup, but still no closer to a threat to the cup.

Beyond needing a #1C, we lack RW's. And a Hedman type D-man. Gio was never at that level and declining rapidly, and none of the remaining guys are close. Speed of attack is more an issue than speed of players. Ability to make a first pass is lacking. Dump and chase is fine if you have players that can win the battle.

Right now... no one. Honestly, as long as there is a solid return, and a possibility to build around 'X', anyone is on the table.
The protected roster for the expansion draft is a pretty good indication though I suspect there will be some moves prior to the final list of protected players.

I agree. If the return is a top center or stud defenceman then everyone is available.

The Flames (or anybody else) are not getting Eichel unless they are willing to give up present star power, futures and prospects. So if that's what we have to do - let's do it and not just Eichel - let's try to grab Reinhart who is also available.
Likely the only team in the league with no players "untouchable" who have valuable pieces are the Flames. They have what it will take to get this done. It will be expensive but this is the only chance they will get. Daryl Sutter was not brought in for a rebuild - he was brought in to get them a Cup and that will not happen with Monahan (or Lindholm) as the #1 Centre. So Buffalo can have the pick of Calgary's complete roster & prospect pool. Here is something that I can see happening.
To Buff:
Tkachuk, Monahan, Valimaki, Zary, 2021 First (lottery protected), 2021 Third (Edmonton's from the Lucic Trade)
To Calg:
Eichel
Reinhart
Buffalo gets (1) a first line winger - one of the best in the league that will drag that team into battles and will be their new captain (2) A top notch second line centre or a lower level 1st line centre until Cozens arrives (3) A Top 3 pairing Defense prospect in Valimaki (4) A top 6 forward (Centre) prospect in Zary (5) A top 10 pick this year (lottery protected) and a third rounder.
Calgary gets (1) A top 5 Centre in the league in his prime to go up against McDavid, Scheifele, Drasaitl, Matthews and others (2) A top 6 winger to play with Eichel & Gaudreau or Lindholm and Dube/Mangiapane and can also play centre when needed. This gives the Flames what they need now (next season) to compete for a Cup; and it gives the Sabres star power now, high draft picks now, an A plus Centre prospect, an A minus defense prospect who is already playing in the league. I can't see anybody else willing to give up that much for Eichel and I can see Calgary willing to do it. And the money is close enough that they can make it work. It is a LARGE price to pay but it is the only way you get a player like Eichel. poop or get off the pot!

Bet Ruzicka gets a look, sounds like he practiced with them today.

On top of that, hope they give Mackey a little more time as well as Philips. Gawdin should be in for the remaining games too. Bench whoever else at this point, it no longer matters.

I was checking out stats for RW's and guess which eye-rolling team has an abundance of talent to target in a trade..... Phoenix

They have 3 players, in the top 20 for RW scoring leaders.

Yes, it's cliche because Treliving worked there before - but if they could snag Garland or Keller - they'd be a great fit in CGY, considering their ELCs & production.. this should have been done for Bennett when he was here, as well as trading a 1st along with Lucic to sign Hall prior to this season, then we could have sacrificed Gaudreau and still be ok with Tkachuk and Hall on LW

Trading a first at this point is a step backwards. Our prospect pool is one of the worse in the league. This years pick shouLd be a top 10 pick which should net us a good player. That was probably one of Treliving’s biggest mistakes was over valuing where this team was.

Well he wasn't alone. The start of the year had all of the pundits applauding the additions and the depth the Flames had. Meh, the entire roster poop the bed. Under performed and here we are. Honestly, I think we are deeper than the Oilers but we don't have a MacDavid or Drai. Smith found a another gear and Nurse upped his game. Besides that. meh. Those 4 guys dragged that team to success and were better than the Flames this season.

It’s true, normally that’s the kind of thing that’s supposed to jump start your team but instead it took a team that’s been on edge since the Colorado series over.

Just looked at our projected lineup and this dialogue pretty much sums it up

Fans: At least now our older players can sit and we can get a look at some prospects

Sutter: Best I can do is Nordstrom on the 2nd line and Nestorov on the second pairing

The first 3/4 of the season that Peters came in, when they finished first in the West, they were unstoppable. After the all-star break of that year, they have not been the same team. They have been in a downward spiral. Whatever was said at the players-only meeting was the icing on the cake.

Since they have more or less been eliminated, JG has been lights out. I appreciate that he is at least trying to get the team a better return for when he inevitably gets traded.
