Trip Advisor review of Peel Pub:

Rubbery wings and sour beer

Have been a loyal patron for over 30 years. They have the smallest wings of any pub around. They are the size and taste of frozen Olymel/Flamingo frozen wings with a rubbery consistency. I put this to the server who, after being questioned and hesitating, said they’re deep fried. No way these rubbery wings are deep fried; my guess is they came out of a microwave. Wondering when draft lines were last cleaned — the beer was sour.

the rumour back in the day (late 90s, when she was in the basement on Ste-Catherine) was that they recycled unused beer and uneaten chicken wings. we fully believed it and we were more than happy to accept the lower prices it led to.

I believe that they were actually sanctioned for the recycled beer when they were in the dirty basement

For sure, but it doesn’t mean they didn’t have a successful season. Making it to a conference title is success, to a Stanley Cup final is success. Sure the ultimate goal is the SC, but there are a ton of factors that produce a SC winner, some controllable, some not. It isn’t an easy thing to win even if a team has the overwhelming odds to do so...that’s why they play the games. Wanting and expecting perfection is not realistic.

150 years ago, 8 of us (6 guys, 2 women) went to the Peel Pub before a Leafs game.

We ordered 3 pitchers.

"What size?"

"The large, I guess."

We thought the large was the 60 oz. Nope, 140 oz.

And then the Leafs got murdered by the Habs, we were trash-talked by some 80 year old Habs fans in the concourse (they were so franking cute I wanted to die) and Craig Wolanin blew out his knee, never to play another NHL game again.

Good times.

Our softball league played down at Coronation Park and afterwards most of the teams would migrate to Peel Pub (some teams were sponsored by the Wheat Sheaf, but as they broke up for the night, the night owls and drunks would stagger over to Peel Pub to merge with the rest of us drunks).

I lived a 10 minute walk away and was in my later 20's / early 30's . . . so I really didn't have to worry too much about consumption and subsequently getting home. Not to mention at that age, hangovers were never a problem. The wings were the smallest you could find, and the beer was mostly wet - but if you had enough of the beer, the wings seemed fine, and each subsequent pitcher seemed better.

Danault would be a great 3rd line centre. I'd much rather have him that Kerfoot.

What the frank are you even doing here?

This is a Leafs thread.

Are all you Habs douchebags going to just suddenly show up here?

I hope your poutine goes soggy.

Yeah, he's slowly but surely pricing himself away from Montreal.

Too bad, he's a very useful player.

I thought he was pricing himself to stay. Who would offer him more than 4?

I honestly don't know.

In a flat cap with what he's produced in his career? He's a Selke candidate for sure, but you expect maybe 10 - 15 goals from him (in a full season) for another year or two before he tails more. I'd put Danault at $4m tops because of his Selke acumen - for a team with cap space and a big need for a 3rd line guy. I guess we'll see how the market treats him.

I actually didn't hate the one in Toronto - it was a great place to watch an important game, where the whole bar was watching.

I remember they had grilled cheese sandwiches for two or three bucks - always good to grab one or two just before you left.

It was about the only thing on the menu I would touch.

IIRC, the one in Montreal had spaghetti and red sauce for $1.99
