Is this the same one that tried to sign with the Oilers a few years back and NHL jumped in and said no?

Cool cool, I hope he pans out. I just remember it was an epic preseason run here as a tryout

Yeah from what I read EDM signed him after the tryout and something was illegal about it due to some CBA rule and he was forced to go back to Russia or something like that. GM at the time admitted they didn’t read CBA thoroughly and missed the part where how they can sign international players and rules about it. Otherwise he would have been an Oiler

to be fair, the Oilers had some really really poop teams back then(still kinda do once you get past their core players) so it probably wasn't too difficult to make an impression in camp.

He didn’t play a full year in North America, that’s the rule they didn’t know. He wasn’t drafted and was invited to Oilers camp where he looked really good. That’s when the NHL stepped in with the rule. So he had to go play a full season in the CHL I believe and he looked good, but had some injuries. Then opted to go play in Russia.

I don't expect more than Prokhorkin 2.0. I imagine that he'll rotate in and out of the lineup and be a one-year filler so that the organization can keep a kid (like Kaliyev) in Ontario for most of the season and not rush him. He'll then go back to Russia at the end of the year and not really be missed because we want a kid to get his spot, anyways. I don't see much upside, but there's not much downside, either.

I really do wonder why he picked LA, though. Did Kovalchuk tell him about the beaches or is it one of the few NA cities that he knows anything about? Russians haven't really worked out for the Kings and a pass-first player is hardly what they need right now. Maybe he just figured that he'd have a better shot at ice time in LA than most places. Who knows.

Well, LA didn't win the lottery, but they also weren't jumped (i.e. they didn't move up or down), so they stay at picking #8 in the draft. I've read that there's a bit of a drop-off after the top 8 players, so I'm relieved.
