this is what I teach as a vanity metric, because it really has no relevance to the team as of today. What matters most is what can Giroux give this team today, right now?
- jd250

It wasn't meant to be a testament to his current value, simply, to show he's been very productive over his career when compared to the other 800 or so yearly NHL players. Not bad for a 23rd overall pick!!

The season was over yet the coach didn't seem inclined to play him more minutes or use him on the pk I dont recall. Need your bottom pair to at least give you 15 imo. Morin didn't look like an nhl dman to me.
- hello it's me 2050

This is an interesting observation. I would say in general as the season winded down and it was clear the Flyers were not making the playoffs, AV never coached it that way. For example, he still played his veterans on key PPs and late in games over his younger players. I posted at the time that this made no sense; I mean why not give the younger players a chance to play in tight situation to get them experience? AV just seemed reluctant to do that even though it was clear the season was over.

lol people are so ridiculous. you posted a stat showing giroux in a good light, nah let's shift the conversation to something a little more negative.

also, in a full season he's probably still around a 60 point player easy.

Yes no doubt at one time Giroux was a top forward in the game, but not anymore. I still think he can add value, but only if the price is right on his next deal.

I could easily see him having a strong playoff performance if we can turn this ship around. Crosby’s past 3 playoff series have all been sub par and they’ve lost all three series, doesn’t mean he’s cooked. Sometimes the team isn’t where it needs to be and it affects the top guys and sometimes the points just don’t come for a good player.

agreed, the NHL is way faster now, way more skill, you need a team to succeed, your best players need a team. if you can take you best shut down group and just pin them against G or the #1 line things become easy. if you can take you top 2 shut down lines and pin them against G, it is even easier. If the competition doesn't respect your depth, they will load up against the only threat

Anything to piss all over anything that's been good. Giroux will be 34 next January, sure his production will decline as he ages, it's the absolute "norm".

He's still hauling the mail for the team offensively, which is the issue, if we're talking about the team's problems. It's up to management to solve that problem, not Giroux.

Being a new poster how has your experience been so far on Hockey Buzz?
- hello it's me 2050

About same as other sites. Mods definitely pick and choose when discussions get heated and give out bans to those with different opinions than there’s. At least on almost every site I’ve ever gone on. It is what it is. Personally I like to just see the different thought process of fans.

I agree with all of these type moves… except 1 big question, how does this do anything other than shuffle the cards? Is there a part 2 to obtain a true 1c and 1d? That’s a lot of work to get done especially in 1 off season and just end up same or possible worse or only slightly better. Not being an ass but curious if there would be anything else if they actually accomplished these things. I mean it’s possible as Seattle could help. So really only talking about moving 2 pieces and bringing in a couple mid level players.
- Im back

You have to look at the big picture here.
1. There is only so much you can do in 1 off season
2. I didn't mention above that Myers, NAK and Braun are also gone in a trade
3. These moves make the Flyers harder to play against. JVR is a 1 dimensional offensive player (he can essentially tip in pucks and make a nice pass). Jake is a complete liability defensively as is Ghost. The Flyers will be a better defensive team that is more physical to play against.
4. These moves will also add leadership, more voices in the room from respected players that have been through the grind of multiple Stanley Cup runs on really good teams like St. Louis and Colorado.
5. We must expect that TK and Hayes will have better seasons, and that Farabee will continue to become a legitimate top 6 forward.
6. We are leaving room for York, Allison and Frost to show what they got and inject youth and enthusiasm into the lineup.
7. You already have a 1C in Couturier. Just need to put Farabee and TK on his wings and leave them alone for the season!
8. Edit: Tell AV to stop changing lines every single game!!

All toll, this is a pretty good shakeup I have outlined here that should significantly improve this team right away. At a minimum if the Flyers did all these things, they would be the favorite to win their division IMO. the lineup would look something like this.

Hart, Anderson

Provorov, Larsson
Ekholm, Sanheim
York, Morin
Zamula, Attard

Couturier - TK - Farabee
Hayes - Giroux - Allison
Laughton/Frost - Schwartz - Foligno/Saad
Whoever is left

Yes g would be that… the problem is that’s not good enough for your top player or top 2 player. G should honestly be moved to like the hossa role(later in career) a pp specialist but not the key part of pp unless maybe 2nd unit. With the role g should be playing he should be around the 40 -45 point mark. But at 8mil a year it doesn’t fit. And obviously we don’t have that 80-90-100 point top talent on roster so comes back to players slotted wrong and will be average at best until status quo changes

It’s gonna get heated sometimes. Like you said you get a ban and others posting way worse attacks. Maybe they should give a warning first instead of going straight to a ban.

Yes, unless I didn’t see the warning haha

To be honest some of the moderators let their personal feelings dictate who gets banned and who gets a pass. They act like real Divas.......

Yea it really is. Watching these games that are left, these teams can really skate, very strong bottom lines, we are going to need a lot of guys to step up if we are going to be a good team moving forward.

Especially the Colorado - Vegas series. These are clearly the two best teams in the league IMO, even better than Tampa.

Yesterday after our exchange I dipped a little into archives. MJL last posted April 7/8/9th. I forget which of these days. If that is when he was banned, he should be back in a couple of days, not weeks.

Isles can skate
Habs can skate
Canes can skate
Of teams left in playoff only probably Boston probably one wouldn’t say is a good skating team but when you have that much talent on a line it will carry you for a long time. All hall of famers which is rare.

If you don’t have a really fast skating team you have to counter with something: goaltending? Great defensively team play? Idk something
Philly has none of it. Yet…

Being from Boston, I have hated the Boston Bruins practically my entire life. I became a Flyers fan in the mid 70s as Clarke was my favorite player and have thankfully never looked back. One reason for this is just the sour grapes you hear from the Bruins every single time they lost to a playoff series: "It was the refs fault", or "how could they call too many men on the ice at that point in the game??"

Waaa .. Waaa ... Waaaa!!

Well, they are at it again! Apparently nothing changes 4 decades later. The Bruins lost last night to go down in the series 3-2, but according to their coach Bruce Cassidy it was not because the Islanders played great. Instead it was because the refs call penalties on the Bruins that are ticky-tack (you know things like cross checking an Islander off the back of his head, or slashing an Islander that is breaking in alone to shoot on their goalie) but they don't call the same penalties on the "New York Islan .. ah Angels". Oh, and then my all time favorite, the refs show no respect for Patrice Bergeron because they throw him out of the face off dot 4 times because, well, he cheats every single time!!

Waaaa ... Waaaa ... Waaaaa!

What an embarrassing organization and what an embarrassing post game presser from Bruce Cassidy. Its a shame too, because as the late, great George Carlin would recommend, Cassidy should have just told his team "You LOST Bruins! You're a bunch of LOSERS Bruins!". I mean they missed out on that last night !

Where I disagree with you is regarding your position that you must pick in the top 5 in order to get a top player.

I would not be in favor of trading Couturier unless I exhausted every other option or Couturier told the Flyers what Jones told Columbus, that he does not intend to resign. I don't think the Flyers are close to either scenario yet. I think the Flyers should get rid of Jake, JVR and Ghost to free up cap space, and then make some smart mid level FA signings, while also leaving room for Frost, York and Allison to get a full season under their belt and then evaluate what you have. That is the direction I would go.

- jd250

Please don't erect strawmen just so you can knock it down. I have never, ever said you MUST draft in the top 5 to select an elite player.

People who say: look, Pasta was drafted late first, and Kucherov not at all and Point in the 3rd and so on and so forth, ignore a simple fact of arithmetic. Lets say we are looking at top 5 pick elite players. Well, there are by definition 5 spots in the top 5. There are about 210 spots outside the top 5 for the other superstars to come from.

If x # of elite players come from top 5 draft picks, and y from outside it, then if x and y are equal, it does not mean that you have an equal chance of getting an elite player picking outside the top 5 as you do within it. It means that your chance of getting said elite player is 42 times more likely in the top 5 than outside it.

Those are hugely lopsided odds.
